Uwe Boll is the Worst Director?

Because of his bold relentless personality in interviews I can see why it would be fun to cut up Uwe Boll for his antics and his films. And Now Entertainment Weekly has offered a list of 11 of his films up as evidence that Uwe is possibly the WORST director in film.

Judging by 11 of his movies — which one man had the fortitude to watch — the German schlockmeister is definitely in the running

Now, the 11 movies on which they are passing this speculative judgement are as follows:

German Fried Movie – 1991 (series of sketches spoofing sitcoms)
Murder in Geneva – 1993 (Political Crime Drama)
The First Semester – 1997 (College Comedy)
Sanctimony – 2000 (American Psycho clone)
Blackwoods – 2002 (Suspense Drama)
Heart of America – 2003 (Guns in Schools drama)
House of the Dead – 2003 (first real US Wide release – video game adaptation)
Alone in the Dark – 2005 (Video Game adaptation)
Bloodrayne – 2005 (Video Game Adaptation)
Bloodrayne 2 Deliverance – 2007 (Video Game Adaptation)
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Seige Tale – 2007 (Video Game Adaptation)

So this is a wide sampling of Boll’s portfolio, and there are no Oscar contenders on the list. But I have to hand it to this guy. He has a career set for life. He is the master of generating buzz (Boxing his critics, Retirement Petition challenge, general fearless boldness) and he has cornered the market for Video game movies. Any smaller studio wanting to put their game to film can count on Boll to step up. (Maybe he should do Halo)

But is he the WORST? Sure, he may be a far cry from the best but he has a lot of experience doing this gig, and from John’s accounts he is a naturally likable guy in person. Maybe he just charms himself into movie after movie.

I can honestly say I haven’t seen the majority of the films on this sampling list, so I don’t have an issue with him as a director as I have more experience with his presence in the media instead of his works. All this in mind, there is a lot of positive Buzz about Postal (and not just from Boll).

Maybe he will surprise everyone. Maybe it will just be one more film to add to this list to use against him.

Who would you say is the worst director in film?

  1. I’m really entertained by the current Uwe Boll antics… and because I realised the other day that I’ve never actually seen a Uwe Boll movie I went and picked up ‘BloodRayne’ (cheap) on Sunday. And actually, I enjoyed it. I wonder if I should be embarrised.

  2. There are a ton of movies worse than Uwe’s – some of the spoof movies mentioned below are candidates.

Other “uber” director’s films are just as bad only with loads more money – for instance Michael Bay (no story, just impressive effects/CGI and “cool” music – like a 2 hour video clip).

At least Uwe attempts to tell a tale – badly so far but I have very high hopes for Postal. I’ll even see that before the Indy film to avoid the crowds :)

  3. Have you seen House of the Dead?

    A) They used clips from the video game instead of actual gore in the film. The 90’s original game.

    B) There is a fight scene in the middle of the film where the camera pans around the characters like they are in a character select screen, while fighting. And when the Asian chick bites it… the camera zooms in on the main characters eye and we get a recap of the same fight scene.

    He’s a fucking shit director.

    (still love his tenacity though)

  4. ok…ok….OKAY?????!!!! WHAT THE FUCK REALLY? do you have a crush on the guy? john or whatever your name is? seriously how dare you even mention halo in the nearest visinity of uwe boll. It’s a shame really…you sound just like all those fucking worthless producers that make movies just for the money…not for the art or the pleasure of normal day people. This man is a disgrace to all that is holy and i just cant seem to get why you fucking like him so much? COME ON! oh its great for you to see him mutilate video games just cause you dont play them…..lets just wait till he remakes Ben-Hur, Casablanca, Dances with Wolves or fucken Paths of Glory.

  5. The Wicker Man remake was just a man out of his element. Neil LaBute has made some pretty damn good movies: In The Company Of Men, The Shape Of Things, Your Friends & Neighbors.

  6. It depends how you think about it. If you think about it from the level of pure filmmaking skill, then maybe he is. If you think about it from the perspective of the personality of the person as well as their skill then no way. Boll is way too cool for that and i do respect that he only ever fucks up with his own money, and he somehow manages to get these big name actors into his films. Not to mention, he always bounces back no matter how big a disaster his last film was. Boll never stays down.

I second Ed’s choice, or maybe the guy who made ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ or the guy who made ‘Battlefield Earth’, or that ‘Wicker Man’ remake perhaps…

  7. That petition he encouraged is up to over 200,000 as of yesterday. I’ve been checking in on it one a night just to see where it’s going. I don’t want him to stop making movies, but I am curious if the petition can make it’s mark.

  8. how do you measure ‘crapness’ there is a lot of directors out there that are just as bad as Uwe. we all just remember Uwe due to all his antics. What I find strange is that when a director has proven himself to be as shite as Uwe they usually disappear off the scene. Whoever gave him a chance to make 12 films is beyond me. I ve been laughing with everyone else at his antics but yesterday I heard that he may direct God of war. Now I have come to my senses the world is not better place with Uwe in it he pollutes potential and for that I am not a hater. ( I m off to sign the list so he doesn’t make any more movie,s done get me wrong i dont mind him thrashing his own ideas but that not what he does he craps all over something that could be otherwise be good under some other director) rant over

  9. um, how about the brainless leaders behind the creations of epic movie, date movie, and meet the spartans. i think those guys are shamelessly terrible.
