The Writer’s Guild Association of America have announced their list of Nominees for the 2008 Awards (My picks are in red):
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Diablo Cody – “Juno”
Tony Gilroy – “Michael Clayton”
Tamara Jenkins – “The Savages”
Judd Apatow – “Knocked Up”
Nancy Oliver – “Lars and the Real Girl.”
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Ethan and Joel Coen – “No Country for Old Men”
Paul Thomas Anderson – “There Will Be Blood”
Ronald Harwood – “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”
Sean Penn – “Into the Wild”
James Vanderbilt – “Zodiac.”
Animation continues to get snubbed by almost all the associations. Where is Ratatouille??? I’d also would have liked to have seen 3:10 To Yuma on there, but over all I can’t complain about the list of nominees. It’s nice to see “Lars and the Real Girl” getting some recognition too.
Ratatouille not getting a nod is a shame but think about it, these awards are handed out by the WGA, and animation does not currently fall under their members. In fact it is one of the sticking points for the strike. WGA wants to force animation writers be a part of their little ‘club’. So it makes sense in the minds of the WGA to snub an animation title.
I’d have liked to see some nod to Scott Frank on “The Lookout”, which he also directed. But I could not tell you who should or should not be there.
Who would you take out to include 3:10? I’d like to see Assassination of JJ and Gone Baby Gone. Or how ’bout Superbad to fill out the original screenplay deficeit?
James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) – OUT! .. Ben Affleck & Aaron Stockard (Gone, Baby, Gone) – IN
Also, I think your on the money with animation John. Although Finding Nemo did get a couple of smaller award nominations. And was nominated for a BAFTA for Screenwriting.
Ratatouille is being screwed though.
