The Big Announcement LIVE Tonight – November 2nd 2007

Uncut-Small

Well this is it folks. For a couple of weeks now we’ve been telling you that a major announcement was coming concerning the future (or lack thereof) of The Movie Blog. On Wednesday’s LIVE show we announced the first half of the news. The Movie Blog will be no more. That’s right folks, after 4+ years of being the best damn movie blog on the internet, The Movie Blog is heading off into the sunset (Re-Visit the post on The 10 Most Defining Moments In Movie Blog History).

BUT THAT’S ONLY HALF THE ANNOUNCEMENT!

Tonight at 6pm EST (3pm PST) on the Uncut LIVE show, we will be announcing the second part! I’ll save that news until tonight, but I will clear up some of the biggest rumors:

1) I did NOT get a TV show. The VH1 show that I was slated for never got off the ground and is still not happening as far as I know.

2) I did NOT accept the studio job. I was excited about it at first, but it ended up being something I wasn’t interested in.

3) The Movie Blog is not merging with other sites to form a bigger site.

4) No, George Lucas did not realize that I’m the only person in the world who could properly lead a new Star Wars franchise and handed full control of Lucas Film over to me (that’s still in negotiations though). :P

So tune swing by here for the announcement tonight.

At 6pm EST, you can also just listen to the show live right here (the player below will automatically start streaming the show when we go live):

  1. To each his own. I still say: His life. His site. His decision.

I don’t know if you were in on the other Nowlive broadcast where he was talking about the big loss he took in traffic and commensurate drop in income. This is how he earns his living and he’s entitled to not have to sell his car, move into a 500 square foot apartment and subsist on a diet of Ramen Noodles just to keep this site alive.

This way he will still have a voice, albeit in a narrower niche.

My own site covers mainly sci-fi, superhero and action movies because that’s what happens to interest me most. I have no doubt there are tons of sites out there covering every sort of movie genre there is.

    Vic

  2. That’s completely different. He used to say he enjoyed talking about movies in general, gained our trust, and now he pulls this, “Well I don’t REALLY care about normal movies all that much, I REALLY REALLY care about Sci-Fi, so count me out!”

I posted a huge comment on the other post he made about why I don’t like this decision.

  3. I’ve said it before and I won’t be shy about mentioning it again. You guys are all welcome over at Screen Rant. :-)

And nbakid… “backstabbed”? Come on man, if you had a friend who threw great parties at his house every weekend, and he paid for the booze and food, and then decided he wasn’t going to do it anymore would you say he backstabbed you?

This is John’s site and he’s free to do what he wants with it.

  4. Congrats on the move! I have been a long time fan of TMB… I’m actually in Hollywood and a producer in the industry and I’ve been a fan for years. This is sad news that The Movie Blog is going. It’s funny because in my browser, right next to The Movie Blog link, is the Coming Soon link. Coincidence? Destiny? Anyways, good luck John!

  5. John, Thank You for The Movie Blog. It has been great run.

I have this list of about ten moviesites that I check every morning. TMB has been one of those for a long time. Although I’m not that big scifi-fan on general, I really hope that Scifimission will be something equally as great as TMB.

    Once again, Thank You.

  6. John, I’m going to miss TMB in ways you can’t understand. I work in the biz building “stuff” for genre films and have enjoyed your site on a daily basis! I haven’t heard the live feed but I hope if fills the shoes… good luck!

  7. As a friend of John’s although i promised not to tell I have to confirm the rumored sex change operation is very true and is the big news…. no really it is… seriously. Ok yeah I might have fabricated that :)

The big news is we are no longer good friends and he is now recruiting for a new buddy. Must be medium build, handsome and witty. No hot chicks need apply. ( git outta here Serena )

    :)

  8. I don’t know what’s coming tonight, but let me say it has been a joy reading and listening to this site for the last few years. This site set the bar for what movie blogs are, and it’s a bar that will never be met again with the same style. The international friends salute you guys.

  9. Hey guys,

It’s been a blast writing for the movie blog…I love all of you guys who made me feel like a part of the family. :) but the news is not just sad…there actually is a good announcement as well!! But, I’ll never tell! ;)

  10. Yeah, I’ll be popping on to nowlive tonight.
I gotta listen to the last show again Phil!
What even sucks more, most of you guys and gals will be gone :(

I’m not sure what site I’ll get my fix from.
    maybe filmjunk.com

  11. Yeah, i second Mr Kinger’s motion. Don’t miss out folks.

Actually, John (maybe subconciously) dropped a huge clue as to the second part of the anouncement on Wednesday’s show. I burst out laughing, it was so great. If you have time, listen back to the show and try and figure it out. Seriously, you’ll kick yourselves when you realise what it was;)

  12. Damn you to hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK. The hints are suggesting that we’ll still be able to get our John/Doug (and maybe Darren and Bruxy) fix, but in a different place or different form.

The LIVE show is always at 5pm (Central), so I’m usually in my car on the way home.

Maybe…(cough, cough), I’m coming down with something (wheeze) and I need to get home in time to hear this.

I’ve been listening since (near) the beginning. I hope the ride isn’t over…it’s been fun so far.

  13. I highly recommend everyone to go to the link at the post to nowlive, sign in, and enter the chat boards today. Let Campea & the gang know they have done a great job. Especially SoulVideo (btw, Freddy Krueger > Master Chief [-P).

Oh, and for old times sake, I shall leave with my comments of Transformers 2 and The Dark Knight:

PLEASE DON’T SUCK! PLEASE DON’T SUCK! PLEASE DON’T SUCK!

    See ya tonight on Uncut!

  14. well john as much as we disagree on pretty much everything just wanted to say goodbye to the movie blog as we know it.

I have a feeling this won’t be the last we see of you but its a sad day to say goodbye to this site…oh the fights i have had here….good times good times

  15. A sad, sad day. I’m actually depressed!
    *clicks TMB off home page*
I thought I would never need to do that :( fuck!
I could guess all day what is going on but I bet it’s something we least expect.
John is really excited about this, so for us it’s got to be some positive and better than TMB.

  16. Hey Guys… my spies have found out what the “Big Announcement” is… GET READY…

As of 10am tomorrow, John Campea will then be known as JOANNE CAMPEA!!!

    You go John, um, Joanne!

  17. I had a feeling this was gonna happen one day.

I’ve been listening to the podcast for almost 3 years.

Without a doubt, this will hurt my productivity at work.

I can safely assume John has spent time strategically placing his pieces of chess…and now it’s time he called “checkmate”!!

Good luck dude, I’ll miss you and the gang.

  18. John, I won’t reveal what you’re doing next, but let it be known that we at Cinematical wish you tons of good luck and hope all your hard work pays off down the line. And like they write in the yearbooks … KIT!

  19. A sad sad sad day. By far the best movie site on the net. John, you brought a passion and a personality to the plain old movie news. Don’t always agree with you, but you make it worth reading/listening/watching. You are the best movie pundit out there, and you will be missed. All the best.

Can’t wait to hear this announcement tonight.

  20. More live webcams. More Live webcams. Why do you think Muadib? I wish you guys the best of luck. Remember to be true to yourself. Are you gonna work for a guy named Rupert, or Sergay, or any of those guys?

  21. I hope congratulations are in order. I’ve been reading the past few years and have made it one of my daily stops.

All good things… well let’s hope you don’t introduce a Q-type character… never really got that guy.

  22. It’s pretty obvious that the site is going to become more of a “TV Show on the internet”. No more podcasts but videocasts and such. If it’s not that it should be ’cause John and the guys would do great.

  23. John and Doug are going to join “Heroes” as a pair of Canadians whose powers only work when they touch fists and yell “WONDER TWIN POWERS ACTIVATE”. Doug then turns into some sort of house cat, and John become a bucket of water.

I don’t see them lasting long on the show.

  24. HAHA! Ok, the “COMMENT OF THE DAY” goes to Mr. Stay Puft:

“He’s the new hitting coach for the Toronto Blue Jays.”

Good grief… I certainly couldn’t do any worse than they other guy did this year.

  25. Actually, it was #4, but then John realized it was George *LOPEZ* and that he wanted to reinvent Star Wars as a Spanish Telenovella and he decided against it.

  26. I still think, based on John’s clue about his own blog – which uses WordPress – that he and perhaps Doug have an entertainment reporting gig via a column or video blogs.

Failing that he is going to film school in LA.

  27. Aw shit, this is scary! A few hours until the apocalypse. What could be the announcement? The suspense is killing me!

Seriously, great job with the site, Campea. Looking forward to today’s show. Oh, you can own Star Wars anytime you want; Lucas just thinks he owns it (lol!).

  28. by the way why redesign when you are closing down. i think not….This is an Evil Teaser campaign to boost Live show viewership numbers …so that John can retire with gazillion dollars from some web 2.0 company …

  29. Well, since #2 would have been the most likely, now I’m a bit stumped…

    My best three guesses:

    1) The Movie Blog has is about to merge with some of the other blogs, into one big mother of all film blogs. Consider: Movie Blog joins with Screenrant and Film School Rejects for example.

    2) The Movie Blog will no longer be known as The Movie Blog. It will be known as something else. “Movie Blog Uncensored” or something like that.

    3) Either that or John Campea’s engaged. If so, congrats, Gio.

Of course, if none of the above apply, then simply put, Google screwed him (and the int’l friends)
