Johnson In Talks To Direct Ghost Rider 2

blaze5.jpeg In an age of sequels, this is one that actually took me by surprise. It looks like they are in talks to bring back Ghost Rider for a follow up film. We get the ghastly news from moviehole

“We’re talking about it, yeah, talking about it,” says Johnson of “Ghost Rider 2”. “I don’t know what I’m going to do, to be honest. After Daredevil and this … it takes so long, these movies. I really want something different, and the pressure of the fan community is always so great.”

But if there is a “Ghost Rider 2”, Johnson has his ideas.

“If there’s a second one, I would push for Scarecrow,” he says. “In fact, in my first script it was Scarecrow who was the villain, but then I heard that they were going to put him in the Batman movie. But now having seen it, he wasn’t really in it that much. And the Marvel Scarecrow is really pretty cool, so I think he’d be an excellent villain. I also think there’s a character named Blackout that could be interesting, [and] there’s Vengeance from the later comics.”

I do not know if this a good idea for Johnson. I can understand a studio wanting to make another Ghost Rider movie for financial reasons, but Johnson has not been beloved by fans for his work in the comic book genre. Elektra, Daredevil, Ghost Rider have been some of the worst received comic movies made and he is responsible for directing all of them. In the moviehole article he goes on to discuss how he would like to return to comedies ala “Grumpy Old Men” where he is more comfortable and where the fans do not have such high expectations.

I do not think I know of many people that would want to see this sequel. I think people may go because it may be “so bad it is good” but other than that I do not see this project generating much excitement. I think it probably would be best for the film and Johnson’s career if he choose to to sit this one out, and retire from comic book films altogether.

  1. o…almost forgot….

message to johnson: don’t ignore the ghost rider comics book’s story plot !!!! if you want succeed with GR2…and change the actor…!!!!!

i know that NIC CAGE is good actor, but he doesn’t suit for Blaze role…!!

    remember This !!!!!!… thank’s

  2. GO JOHNNY BLAZE..!!!!!!

    the first film’s wasn’t good,..and wasn’t bad…..the rate is 3/5
GR 2 should have more action…. like punch, kick, extreme riding with chain etc….

my opinion,..the good action can attract audience..

    …..

  3. It’s a little late on this topic, being July 2008, but i just have to say that it’s a rare thing for these movies to stay true to the comic. The Punisher in the original movie does not have the kevlar and was never a cop. The Ghost Rider movie is a mix of the Original Ghost Rider (Zaranthos) and the new Ghost Rider. Kinda pissed me off. Have any of the movie’s based on comics ever actually been close?

  4. Yeah…he didn’t make Elektra. Which basically makes your post null and void. I mean, how can you expect to be taken seriously as a film critic and journalist when you can’t even get basic – very checkable – facts straight?

Yeah, yeah, I’m not supposed to criticize anyone when making a comment…but at least edit your original post or something.

  5. I agree with Nord, I think Johnson is a really crap director of comic action films.

I also think that the villain in a sequel – should there be one – should damn well be a lot meaner and nastier than then the villain in the original film. As for Johnson’s depiction of Blackheart (lame) I think Papa Smurf might be more bad ass, however if they are going to do it they should get really dark and really serious! Bring on Lilith! That would be awesome.

  6. I happen to have liked Daredevil. I’m not real sure what those who endlessly bitch about it would have wanted to be done differerntly or better.

Oh, and Rob Bowman directed Elektra, not Mark Johnson. And that bomb was far and away worse than anything Johnson ever did in the genre. Though Jennifer Garner did look more voluptuous than she ever did in Alias.

  7. Dan Ketch, excuse me.

That way…it could be like the comics where “Blaze” is the hero, but he thinks “Ghost Rider” is the villain. Of course, by the end, the two would team up together, and then it would be revealed that Ketch is the long lost brother of Blaze.

  8. While there were some good bits in both the theatrical cut of Daredevil and the Director’s cut of Daredevil, there were also the bits in which are very, very lame and neither Johnson nor Arad understood why fans-and moviegoers- hated them for those awful things. Up until the end of both cuts, I forgave them, as both films open with a POV of a character which could be slightly exaggerated. When the corny action (playground flirt fight) and the action that is unrealistic (Daredevil stabbed by Elektra and is wounded, but he can still go toe to toe with Bullseye and later Kingpin) are seen by a POV, it is alright. Really. But when the action remains over the top after the POV is over, then everything else calls into question.

It has grown on me over the years since I seen it, and I have both versions on DVD.

While he did not direct Elektra but produce it, the problems with that film are that Daredevil should have been a minor or supporting character (seriously) , the bad guys don’t turn into green dust when defeated, and the mysticism should have been hinted at but not spelled out. Technically, even spinoff films operate in the same universe created by the property it was spun from.

As for Ghost Rider, I don’t think it was horrible. I was disappointed in any case- more so to do with the lame villains. Now there’s an extended cut of that coming on DVD as well. Good heavens.

Marvel’s Scarecrow I don’t think would be a decent villain in a sequel; that goes double for the Dan Ketch villain Vengaence. But if they really wanted baddies from the Ketch line, how about a real bad ass like Zodiak? Or maybe the ghost-cult The Fallen who “worship” Zaranthos (the demon supposedly connected with Blaze)…and yes, why not introduce Jack Ketch?

  9. Its a poor musician who blames his intsrument. They crappy product turned out from these franchises has nothing to do with the fact they are originally comic book characters and everything to do with crappy film making and bad scripts.

Elektra, Daredevil and Ghost Rider are all very interesting comic book characters and he completely fucked up each and every one of them. Can we please get a real action director at the helm FFS!!!
