Mortal Kombat Begins

225px-GoroMKSM.jpgIn just my last post I was bitching about Mortal Kombat and how much It sucked. (I should note however that it has one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard for an action movie.) Not only did the movie suck; but the game sucked too. Never has a video game received more undo praise than mortal combat – the only saving grace the game had were the fucking fatalities (Virtua Fighter for life). So you can imagine how pumped I was to learn that a REINVISONING of Mortal Kombat is in the works. We get the scoop from moviehole:

“The movie is not going to be a prequel, sequel, or in any form be related to the previous 2 movie. Pretty much like Batman Begins, is going to restart the series with new concepts, stories, etc.

I have to admit that the best thing you can do with this franchise, is pretend the franchise never happened. Although I do not like the previous movies/games I will admit that the characters are cool as fuck and the opportunities to make a wicked tournament – style film are there. Less story and more octagon fighting is what is needed. More Goro less talk.

  1. mortal kombat 1 was a great movie, I even liked 2 being a fan, I definatelly feel it’s worth doing another film as tey have more options on directions of stories to take it now the mytholigies have ben so expanded upon,

Quan chi would be cool on the big screen, and Bo rai cho puking would be fun to see! plus li mei would be so so hot!

yeah, want this movie to happen soon.

    :>

  2. Same concept as Batman Begins? It might be worth a try! Even I grew up playing these great games!

anyway… Let’s just pray they don’t pull a Spuer-Man 3 on us! MAN THAT WOULD BE HORRIBLE!

  3. MORTAL KOMBAT,TEKKEN AND OTHER MOVIES.

Just as thought that the first Mortal Kombat movie and I think
the third movie is still in works I think if Threshold gets the Mortal kombat movie back in pre production this year so they can work on Ninja Scroll and have a go on working on Capcom’s Darkstalkers series.
Crystal Sky are working on Tekken movie still but some of the screenwriters of the tekken movie should go and get Michael Colleary,Mike Werb and Charles Stone to rewrite the script to follow the plot from Tekken 1 and 2 to start on the about Mishima’s,The Tournament and the G Corp.
Other video game movies could be going into movies with Virtua Fighter the movie will loosely follow the story to Virtua Fighter 5 video game and Christophe Gans is working on Onimusha movie,
Gans and other Onimusha game script writers will helm the story for the movie as the plot and storyline will follow up to the first Onimusha game.
    Thank You.

  4. fighting games- tekken series
bushido blade…damn this shit was amazing, one hit kills and SAMURAIS
    street fighter 2
dead or alive is fun tho

    cool list nagey

  5. DOA=Dead or Alive? Dead or Alive over Tekken 3? Dead or Alive stinks.

I like Mortal Kombat because the characters have cool designs, and the graphics (on the original MK and MKII, I never played anything else) had a cool realistic feel to them, especially compared to Street Fighter II at the time.

  6. I disliked Virtua Figther at first. However after 20 plays I soon realized how smooth the timing was with the game. 1 and 2 were great after that they ruined it with the shift key.

The list of fighting games that are my favorites

    Virtua Fighter
    Street Fighter 2
    Bushido Blade
    DOA

    Gmaes I hate
    Mortal Kombat
    Teckken
    Killer Instinct

  7. im not gonna front…i thought the original mortal kombat was one of the best video game movies ever….but the games do suck….this is a not bad idea….dont know how many people still play the games though

  8. Mortal Kombat is the greatest fighting game ever made. i don’t know why anybody would think it’s horrible, it is FAR from horrible.

The movie is far from horrible, too. I loved the first movie. The second one was terrible.

man Doug, coming from a man who loves Roadhouse…that isn’t exactly Oscar material.

  9. I own and enjoy both the first movies. The soundtrack is indeed awesome, and the characters are cool. I don’t want to see a serious Mortal Kombat movie. I don’t want a Sub-Zero with some ridiculous subplot of dead parents thrown into the movie. I would have no interest in that. If they just do another Mortal Kombat movie with a tournament and the sweet characters, I’m game.

If only Newt Arnold wasn’t dead he would be the perfect guy to make this.

  10. Alright, so the trend of re-starting franchises continues. I agree wholeheartedly with Darren. I see NO virue of giving Mortal Kombat a face-lift. The only people you’re going to interest are those in Generation Y, who probably don’t care too much about MK as it is. Am I wrong in this assumption? I sure as hell don’t care anymore about MK. I did 10 years ago though. Too bad….

  11. Mortal Kombat is one of the those movies I really enjoyed as a kid but can’t stand when I re-watch again a few years later.

Mortal Kombat 2 is absolute garbage. I remeber walking out of the theater after it ended and someone yelled out loud “What a fucking piece of shit movie!”

  12. The second movie sucked, but the first one was a lot of fun, I thought.

That being said, the techno theme song is up there with Rocky when it comes to movies with “getting pumped” music.

  13. Haha, that stupid “Mortal Kombat!” music is haunting my mind right now. Thanks Doug. :D

Seriously, I remember both movies sucking, as well as the Street Fighter movie.

  14. Hey, best soundtrack?
From what I remember I was expecting a freaking death metal after the “mortal kombat” on the first fight and all I got as an electronic beat.
Still, Goro tearing someone apart is in my dreams.

  15. man i liked the first one, it wasnt great or anything, but i enjoyed it….now the second one, it sucked all kinds of ass…..and as for the games, i perfer the newer ones over the older ones, but i wouldnt buy either one……

  16. Amen, Virtua Fighter for life. Any game with Jeet Kune Do and Drunken Kung Fu wins favour. Spoiler? Goro died like a pussy in the first movie. I mean he had four arms how did it happen? So Id like to see previous generations of Mortal Kombat in which our dimension loses and Goro kills stuff.

  17. Props on acknowledging how HORRIBLE a game Mortal Kombat was.

As fighting game series go, “MK” isn’t even top 10. I couldn’t believe it at the time when some people preferred it to Street Fighter 2. So choppy, so stiff, so boring, so limited.

  18. Mortal Kombat I will always have soft spot for (the movies I mean), they were some of the first movies I remember watching all the way through, it’s purely a nostalgia thing. I agree with Darren J whe he says that the first wasn’t great but it wasn’t that bad. The second (quality wise) DID suck ass but as I said I like it none the less.

I did hear a couple of years ago about them doing number 3 in the series and that it was going to contain the character who is blind and has telekinetic powers (his name is eluding me right now). But now they are going all “Batman Begins” on the ‘franchise’ and re-starting it all.

So what happened to the sequel, number 3? Is it on hold, or is it abandoned. I really don’t mind if it’s either, I just hope they make a good quality film this time as obviously this time around I won’t just like it for nostalgia’s sake.

  19. Where did you find this? I thought Threshold was still developing Devestation.

How in the world could anyone “Re-Invent” the darn thing? It’s based off a coin op game. Better just to make a live action Tekken film; or dust off Ninja Gadien or the Bad Dudes.

The soundtrack to MK is the worst thing in the first movie (and I liked techno music!) but I disagree with you Doug in that it was a terrible movie. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t that bad. Second film sucked ass. The prequel series which lasted a season or two, and was okay as low moldly cheese goes.

There is no reason to re-imagine, re-invent muss less re-visit Mortal Kombat.
