Some 2007 Direct To DVD Magic

Dukes-Hazzard-BeginningThe negative stigma of “direct to video” (or direct to DVD as we call it now) is still just as strong as it’s ever been. But still, with home theater viewing becoming more and more popular, studios are finding they can actually turn a decent little profit from these minor league films is produced with a tight enough budget. The good folks over at Moviehole put up an interesting article pointing out some of the “bigger” name direct to DVD releases coming in 2007 that I’m sure you’ll be standing in line for on their release dates (please note sarcasm).

Here are a couple of the more notable ones:

– War Games 2: Beat the code (sans Matthew Broderick)

– Starship Troopers 3 (Oh god, wasn’t the DTDVD Starship Trooper 2 enough?)

– Wrong Turn 2 (Why was there even a Wrong Turn 1?)

– Dukes of Hazzard : The Beginning (Do I really have to say anything?)

– THIS IS MY FAVORITE!!!! Once Upon A Time In The Hood (And here’s the rub… it’s stars Steven Seagal and Eddie Griffin! This is going to be so horrible I HAVE to watch it!)

2007 may look like a great year for movies… but I’ll be careful about walking down the row at Blockbuster, one of these might accidentally fall into my basket, and then I’ll have to gouge my eyes out.

  1. Happy New Year, John.. Taking a break from watchin’ the Rose Bowl parade–hey, what about the Stormtrooper band and the dude who looks like Hayden Christensen– anyway, on to the topic:

    1) WarGames 2- I would find it more interesting if Matthew Broderick were there (or Ally Sheedy, Dabney Coleman…is John Wood still around?) because the themes of what was in 1983 was the birth pangs of what is second hand to millons today. Broderick’s character would have grown up, and gotten a “white hat” NSA or DoD job. This seems to be a sequel in name only.

    2) Starship might have some minor brownie points because that “master thespian” Casper Van Dien is back in his original part. I’d like it more if Clancy Brown was back. Denise Richards is too busy, and Doogie’s out of the closet.

    3) Wrong Turn 2- “Booga! Booga!Booga!” says the mutated cannibalistic mountian men. So many low budget films with like themes (Detour, anyone) and the new batch of Hills Have Eyes etc. No interest.

    4) Hey, she don’t look like Jessica Simspon…in any case, folks. Listen up. This Tues Night on the CMT (country music channel) the Dukes reunion flicks. Yes, no real works of art, but they are Picassos and Rembrants compared to the new versions.

    5) I think Sensei Seagal just had a DTV release the other day, can’t remember the name of it.

    And let’s not forget…

Art Of War 2 [note: no Wesley Snipes]

    Fear Of Clowns 2

    Pumpkinhead 4 : Blood Feud

Return to the House On Haunted Hill

    The Sandlot 3

    Species 4
