BluRay – Not Dead Yet

It looks as though BluRay might actually have some interest tipping the scales of the The Civil War of Next Gen DVD Formats™ if only for a moment.

FilmJunk says:

Firstly, there are some major releases from Disney in the form of both Pirates of the Caribbean movies (May 22nd), and Pixar’s Cars (June 5th). More importantly though, Vivid Entertainment have secured the rights to release Debbie Does Dallas… Again on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray on March 28th, putting an end to the so-called Blu-ray porn ban. Add this to upcoming titles that include Reservoir Dogs, First Blood, American Psycho, The Usual Suspects, The Prestige, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Casino Royale… Sony’s looking pretty good right now. What exclusive HD-DVD titles do we have to look forward to? The Game, The Jerk, and… Half-Baked? I am starting to believe that both formats will co-exist for the foreseeable future.

We called it when the Porn industry put their stakes in HD-DVD, but this apparently doesnt apply to classic titles. (29 years ago for you porn efficiandos)

Just like getting a major celebrity to back your political campaign, it can definitely generate interest, but does it mean you are going to win? Certainly not. This just raises a few eyebrows, but its not going to make anyone switch sides.

Im still holding out for a hybrid format. I wont be swayed to pick a side.

  1. I didnt say porn was banned. The Porn ban was that the industry as a whole (or all the major distributors anyways) threw their names in with HD-DVD. They banned BluRay in that sense.

Those blu-ray only titles are simply more appealing than some of the hd only titles, which draws some attention to BluRay. Inevitably I think HD will win out, but BluRay is still putting up a fight.

  2. What “PORN BAN” you talking about, Rodney? There was no ban. It was a choice to go with a simpler format (from what I understand of it).

As for the titles you list as “Blu Ray” specific, well, I don’t know if that’s going to be enough to make it worthwhile. Sony has bombed on so many things over the years because they’re corporately greedy, that it just won’t learn from the mistakes. They had a chance to do great things over the years, but the only thing they seem to do well is screw up big product launches.

  3. Plus people are not taking into account that when porno decided the format war back in the vhs vs beta days there was no INTERNET PORN.

I really don’t know if it will be as big a deciding factor as it once was….

and I would take the jerk over any of the films on that list…

    “He hates cans!!!”

    Great great great film…..
