Terrance Howard as Jim Rhodes in Iron Man

Of all the Superhero movies coming out, I have to say that Iron Man is slowly creeping up my anticipation list.

ComicBook Movie reports:

Casting for the Iron Man movie continues with the report that Terrence Howard (Idlewild) will be supporting lead actor Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man’s buddy Jim Rhodes…

Howard, who most recently could be seen on screen playing “Trumpy” in Idlewild, will play Jim “Rhodey” Rhodes, a close friend/employee of Tony Stark and sometimes a secondary Iron Man suit-filler.

I really like when they set up future installments like this. True to the books, when Tony Stark needed to make some convincing appearances alongside Iron Man, he had his confidant Jim Rhodes fill his rocket boots. Even if there is only ever one movie with Rhodes being a presence in this movie, there may be a spinoff War Machine movie. War Machine was the heavily armed militaristic version of Iron Man, and Rhodes assumed that role when he struck out on his own out from his role of servitude to Tony Stark.

I anticpate a real street attitude if this rumour is true about Terrence Howard. This is not the first superhero role rumoured for Howard. The role of Luke Cage (sometimes known as Power Man) for another Marvel Franchise has been considered for Howard. As a side note, it was this character, Luke Cage, that Nicolas Cage says was the inspiration for his stage name when he dropped his birth name Coppola.

Of course there are others that still rank higher, but news keeps coming out that makes me want to see it. Hopefully they keep this news train going and the movie comes out a winner.

  1. I think them replacing Terrance is a wrong move. The movie was great and most viewers like myself want to see more of the same in future movies. I lose interest in future movies when an actor gets replaced. If I knew about the change before I bought the movie I would have not bought it.

    Terrance is a great actor.

  2. Oh, one last thing, Rod. Howard wasn’t in the running to be Luke Cage. He was being rumored at the time to be IN the film – but as the main villian.

Ash: While Howard was being talked about for Rhodes before Downey cossed the dotted line, I think Howard is still, in audience’s minds, a fresh face. In addition, while Rodney is flat out wrong on the the two points I mentioned, I do have to agree with him on the casting. This is Marvel’s first pic as a stand alone studio (Paramount is distributing) and I don’t think a lot of folks would have given a care about the character’s big screen adventure, having two Oscar nominees on board seems to have raised expectations in a positive way. Downey and Howard will also attact other good actors as well- it would not shock me in the least if the film wound up with an all star cast.

    Batman Begins did it.

  3. Rodney, mate. I don’t know if you’re reading this, but I can’t leave any comments on the Ramones story you put up. There’s some kind of technical internet-y problem I don’t understand.

I would very much like to add a comment to this story, if only to encourage the International Friends to watch the excellent documentary ‘End Of The Century’, which chronicles the many squabbles and disappointments in the lives of the Ramone family.

    Thanks.

  4. I like Terrance Howard as an actor, but I feel it would be better to go with a no name. There are plenty of no names out there with talent. Movies like this require lots of money to front the FX side of the film. Spending money on demanding movie stars almost always destroys big (I’m assuming potential here) franchises like this. Already I’m hearing rumors that Disney will be dropping Orlando Bloom for the 4th Pirates film in order to cut costs. Are you kidding me? You could pay Orland Bloom $100 Million and it’d still make so much profit as to be able to buy a 3rd world country. But my point is, eventually name stars cost too much no matter how much ungodly amounts of money the movie makes.

  5. well ill tell u what i love war machine way more then iron man (just the facts) but iron man is where the story started from so cant wait……by the way terrance howard is a better actor the downey!!!!!!lololol if u r reading this mr. downey jr. u suck lol jk have a good life
