  1. I just saw The Departed but had no clue that it was a remake of Infernal Affairs since it wasn’t mentioned anywhere in its review. So few minutes within the movie I realised that i’ve seen this plot before and then it came to me…it’s a remake of Infernal Affairs.
The Departed didn’t come even close to the intensity of the original movie although Martin Scorcese is known for his spectacular movies.

Needless to say I was fairly disappointed with the way it was shot especially with the happy ending…very Hollywoodish!!

    Let’s hope Martin doesn’t want to remake IA2 and IA3, fingers crossed…

  2. I totally disagree with the Alex Baldwin comment. He has become a parody of himself and this movie highlights that more than most recent sightings of his acting. I agree that in general, all acting is very well done and the casting is great. Leo and Matt both deserve particular recoginition for their efforts, totally believable.

But, in typical Scorcese fashion, too gratuitous the shots to the chest and blood spurting out of the mouth and head, some of which cause surprising outbursts.

All in all a great story, great depiction of the streets of Boston (I assume), great acting, great dialogue but also really really cheesey dialogue, bad love story and too f’ing long. I don’t care how artistic and talented directors are, wrap it up. Less is more.

  4. Just out of interest, did you think it was better or worse then Infernal Affairs?

Like you, I absolutely love that movie and plan on catching The Departed as soon as possible…

  5. Im pretty sure Im the only person who is not head over heels for this flick. Perhaps my expectations were just to high with all the company this movie packed. Dont get me wrong I think it was a good movie just not great. The story was lacking and with a cast like this its hard to believe that Marky Mark steals the show but, he does! And I know this might piss some people off but I think Leo and Jack were miss cast! I wanted them to work, I mean I was rooted for them the whole movie but between Jacks pointless Nicholsonisms and Leo’s lack of growing up to look like someone over the age of 12 it was just to distracting. I almost wish Ray Winstone was in the Jack role for this one. Not to mention its about a halfhour to long, and the final scene makes me think Marty didnt even direct this. I just felt really disappointed coming out of this one.

Hey John just curious to what you think is the best film of the year?

  6. Oh, but the last scene in the film…soooo tacky….

Otherwise one of the few stellar remakes.

2006 has been good for gritty crime flicks: The Departed, The Inside Man and Miami Vice are all big winners with high rewatch value.

  7. I would download an audio commentary by the MovieBlog gang if it was for taxi driver or goodfellas.

And if you’re going to do an Arnold film do Terminator, Conan the ball boring sucks, do T1 not that whore T2.

Ps. I like this site design :) less is more so they say

  8. Boy, I was worried about the box office results (haven’t seen any movies yet). I mean, it’s October, which could’ve given the horrible Texas Chainsaw remake/prequel an advantage (a horror prequel is a BAD idea to begin with!), and The dumb Employee of the Month might of gotten some suckers of comedy.

Thank God Departed was #1. It would be another sad day for USA if we supported shit like The Beginning and Employee.

Eat Departed’s dust, you Razzie wannabes!

  9. I don’t feel like watching that review right now so I can’t say if john points this out enough. I’m more interested in how this treats its original movie. To me it seems like people forget to mention that this is based on a HK movie, and in reality this is just another cheap american remake, but since it’s Scorsese it gets overlooked.

  10. oi u fucking twat Chisox grow some fucking balls dont write that in the fucking message board its more for genralisiing. Have you gone out the way in your sad existance to spoil the film?

    Brian

  11. This film would have been a 10 in my eyes if **COMMENT EDITIED FOR SPOILERS**

    NOTE FROM JOHN
Please folks, don’t spoil the movie for others who haven’t seen it yet. Have some common sense.

  12. John,

just a suggestion, I think it would be ALOT BETTER if you take the time and write out your reviews. Your 3 minute video reviews are cool, but it would be nice if you would elaborate more.

  13. I couldn’t agree more. “The Departed” was done so well and even though it was filled with big name actors, I felt it never detracted from the movie.

I, like you, was never a big fan of DiCaprio. I started to grow fond of him after his performance in “The Beach”. Now in his following movies “Gangs of New York”, “Catch Me if you Can”, and “The Aviator”, DiCaprio has proven to be so much more of an actor. His performance in “The Departed” has to be one of his best yet.
