Premiere Honors Sofia Coppola?!?

Premiere magazine held their annual function where they honored several women for their achievements in the entertainment industry. I think such a ceremony is a great idea. But get this… the people they honored for all their long lists of achievements were Annette Bening, Cate Blanchett, Sally Field, and… are you ready for this…Sofia Coppola?!?!?

Don’t get me wrong here… I’ve got NOTHING against Sofia Coppola… but all those other names have long careers with award winner performances and have achieved almost legendary status. What on earth has Sofia Coppola done? Directed 1 moive. OOoooooo… let’s recognize her for her vast achievements in the industry.

The problem with stuff like this, is that it almost diminishes the honor of the award itself. I mean, come on… how great can the honor be when they also give it to a person who hasn’t done anything in the movie biz except for 1 film of any real note?

I like Sofia Coppola, and I’m interested to see where her career goes and how well her next film, Marie Antoinette, will turn out. But come on… to put her on a stage to celebrate her “achievements” along side such people as Annette Bening, Cate Blanchett, and Sally Field at this point is just dumb. Not yet… maybe later.

  1. John,
A agree with you about it being too soon for her to receive such an award. I have no problem with you disliking or liking any of her films. But the saying ‘of note’ means, to me anyway, kinda the same thing as ‘of significance’.
There are many films ‘of note’ I don’t like, but can appreciate that they are of a quality or significance which others can appreciate, event though I personally don’t like them.
It’s like that top-10 list of films you hate but everyone else seems to love. Would you actually say that films like Pulp Fiction, Saving Private Ryan, and Bladerunner are films aren’t worthy of being called ‘films-of-note’, just because you didn’t like them?
Anyway, I still agree with you. She shouldn’t receive it yet.

  2. She’s a talented, young, FEMALE writer/director, and there aren’t too many of those around, so why not give her an award? If nothing else, she deserves something for giving the world that lingering shot of Scarlett Johansson’s ass at the beginning of Lost In Translation.

I loved The Vigin Suicides and Lost In Translation, and I’m looking forward to Marie Antoinette. Who’d have thought the girl from Godfather 3 would go on to be so talented? In fact, I’d like to offer an award myself – Black Steven’s award for the most inspired and fruitful change of career.

    Congratulations, Sophia.

  3. Hey Ted1108

I was not a big fan of VS, I did very much enjoy her work on Translation… and I can’t comment on Marie Antionette since I have not yet seen it… nor have people I trust commented on it yet.

Yes, I do like her, and yes, as I said in my post, I’m looking forward to seeing MA.

BUt the main point… was that she hasn’t done enough YET to deserve a place with those others. YET.

    Cheers.

  4. John, John, John,
You said that she only did one film ‘of note’, and yet you say you like her?
How’s that exactly? You must explain this.
She wrote/directed Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, Marie Antionette, and starred in Godfather 3 (and 1). All these films have had some wonderful praise put on them (well, except for Godfather 3).
Perhaps, you may not like all of these films, or any, but to say that she only made one film ‘of note’… really…that’s just insulting to her. If that’s your opinion, that’s fine. BUT, don’t say you actually like her with the ‘dis’ you made in the above comments.
I do agree completely though, that a career achievement celebration for her is a few years (if not, decades) premature.

  5. John John explain the difference between Blanchet and Bennings career vs Coppola. I think it’s safe to say that it’s harder to write and direct a movie and get a oscar and two nominations then it is too act in a few movies.

And what do you have against Virgin suicede since that doesn’t seem to merit and just cos Marie Antoinette hasn’t come to toronto yet doesn’t mean it didn’t get a award at cannes and have some fairly good buzz.

  6. Hey IDBA,

Ummm… what are you smoking? I said I LIKE Coppola… hell I even bolded it. My point was that she hasn’t done enough in her short career yet to be recognized with the likes of those other women. Get over yourself.

  7. John, stop your whining. All you do is hate on people (Coppola and Shymalan for example). Give the girl some credit, she was honored because she has accomplished a lot in her short career as a writer/director. The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation are great films. It really is sad how biased you have become, and you don’t even realize it…

  8. What about her little parts in Phantom Menace??? The Outsiders(my favorite movie)?!?!? Brilliant! lol. But really. I completely understand why she is on this list. It’s like Alfie said basically.

  9. she was bad in godfather 3 granted but too much blame gets placed on her as to why that film was bad. s
he was not the only one to blame….godfather 3 is a bad film all round really.

  10. it isn’t really an award though. it isn’t as if they hold a ceremony…they don’t judge ot ont l;ength of time opr the amoutn you have done….

It is their annual issue on woman in hollywood where the select a few woman film makers and actors etc etc and honour their achievements. I see nothing wrong with mentioning coppola in this regard.

  11. While I think Sofia is indeed a chip off the block, and she’s a talented director in her own right, I understood what John means. I concur.

Yes, she’s done other things besides “Translation” and while many (including myself) are looking foward to “Marie”…

When you really think about what John is saying, then YES, Sofia is on her way up, and unless it is to honor her new film [which I think it is] I’d much rather see kudos to Jodie Foster…Penny Marshall…if it is for a body of work.

  12. It is premature, but not ludicrous. Her previous two features were both well received, and “Translation” made her one of only three women to ever be nominated for a Best Director Academy Award. That is something.

Also, and I like Cate Blanchett as much as the next guy, but if its crazy and premature to honor Coppola in the company of Annette Bening and Sally Field, Blanchett isn’t a lot more worthy.

  13. Unlike acting directing is very but very dominated by man, and 3 movies and one of them nominated for Oscars is a pretty good achievement, of course she is young and is expected to do allot more. So maybe it’s a way of getting attention from media and studios so women have more chances at the job.

  14. John

Dude! Come on. Give her credit. She played a boy before Hillary Swank did (Godfather, 1972 – Baby getting baptized). That was a worthwhile performance, crying on cue! LOL

  15. I see your point but i can understand why they focussed on her.
It isn’t a lifetime acheivement thing…they are celebrating woman in hollywood. Directing is still a field dominated by men and she is a young up and coming female director who already has a ton of critical acclaim and her last film was an indie smash.

I have no problem at all with them focussing on her.

who are her peers?? name another female director at her level doing what she is doing??

  16. Wow John I wonder how you define the REAL note thing. Since Virgin suicides was very good(written and directed) Lost in translation was very very very good (written and directed) And Marie Antoinette /written and directed) have gotten rave reviews from friends of mine. I’d like to see any of the other people named there have as good a resume as Coppola, and to note Cate Blanchett started her career towards stardom after Coppola did. Or hell why not compare the awards and nominations list of coppola to any of the others my bet is that hers is a fair biut longer then the rests.

I wonder where this hate towards Coppola is coming from, are you jealous that a women is so much better and capable then you are John?

On a note Coppolas greatest achivement IMO is to bed Spike Jonze.

  17. Hey guys,

Sorry… i should have made this more clear in the post. It’s not that Sofia has LITERALLY only done 1 film. It’s only 1 film of REAL note.

My bad, I thought that made sense in the post… guess not.

    Cheers.

    ~John

  18. I agree with John. It’s true, she’s done a number of good films but it’s WAY too early for this honour. If you’re going to honour women in film how about Salma Hayek or Jodie Foster? Completely agree that this takes away from the overall meaning of an award like this one.

  19. Ok, this time I checked beforehand. It is John posting.

How can someone who hosts “The Movie Blog” not know that Ms. Coppola directed three feature films and one wonderful short film? Did Virgin Suicides not cross your radar? Lost in Translation? Has not all the hype around Marie Antoinette made it up to Canada?

A quick trip to IMDB would have cleared things up.

I agree, however, that an achievment award might be a bit premature. But then again, those Premiere boys don’t want to party all night with a bunch of grannies. Ever seen the entourage Sofia travels with? Hotties!

By the way, I saw Marie Antionette and it fucking rocks!

  20. Well, she has done 4 movies…
Ok, 3 only are worthy to be seen.
But it’s true that’s perhaps a little disproportionate for a so young director, even if she made good ones.
