I have a weak spot for any kind of Sci-Fi or fantasy genre flick. It’s the geek in me. Now, having said that, even I hated Bloodrayne, and surprise surprise, it looks like everyone else on the planet did too!
Get this, the Uwe Boll directed flick cost just $25 million to make (no mention on how much was spent on marketing… but it was at least $10 million), and made only $2.4 million domestically. Worldwde the picture gets even more grim only adding $1.2 million to the total, which ends up being around $3.6 million worldwide! OUCH! That hurts the old anus doesn’t it!
So who is to blame? Well… if you ask Uwe Boll it’s certainly not him! It must be someone else’s fault! I know! It’s Billy Zane’s fault! Yup, Uwe Boll is suing Billy Zane and his Romanr Entertainment company. The good folks at Cinematical give us this:
Uwe, you see, was hell-bent on getting BloodRayne released in over 2,000 theaters, which shows just how much the guy knows about American movie audiences. But Romar had some print problems and the flick only made it into about 980 movie houses. The grand tally for BloodRayne’s domestic release was just under $2.5 million. (Now, call me nuts, but if they’d struck another 1,020 prints … they would have lost even more money, so perhaps Billy Zane should be suing Dr. Uwe Boll!)
What a joke! now, on the one hand, if Boll did indeed have a contract that stated Romar Entertainment would make sure the film showed on 2000 screens, then perhaps there is a basis for the lawsuit. But realistically, when you average out the amount of money the film made per screen… then releasing it to 1000 more screen would have just lost them more money.
Plus, in court you have to prove how much the contract getting broken actually cost you. In this case Boll is going to have a had time proving the broken contract cost him anything. It’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out.
Uwe Boll constantly blames other people for his bombs. In interviews and in DVD commentaries he has blamed his audience for the failure of his movies. In one interview he said his audience was just ‘dum’ and didn’t understand his movies. In another commentary he blamed his audience for not even trying or bothering to view his work claiming his audience is a bunch of immature 12 year olds. But before he used to blaim the video game companies saying that they never support his movies. Well take a guess asshole. No shit they are not going to waste money supporting your crap. No matter what he will find someone to blame. Let’s say he does get advertising for his movie by the game company. His movie will still bomb no matter what. Then he’ll find someone to blame. He’ll probably be like “oh it was….the producers…they didnt do something right.” or “oh im sorry i made a mistake my sound guy messed up the whole film!”

So I read somewhere (wish I could find the quotation) that if Uwe Boll finds enough money he may be able to convince Konami to give him MGS liscence without Kojima’s consent…..that would be a travesty…..but i dont think Konami would do that to Kojima or Snake…..

@Varun, hate to disapoint you, but if you go see (if it is still to be found) the trailer for Dungeon Siege, you’ll be crying. The acting sucks. Great actors, and Boll can only blame himself. He probably tells just to read from the script. Hell, Lucas can make some bad choices(love scenes), but he still does at least a dozen takes, according to Hayden C., who says that there were, in his opinion, better performances. But Lucas can still direct action scenes :) Uwe Boll cant direct crap. Literally.
Luckily I havent played a single game that Boll turned into a movie. Well, I played Dungeon Siege, but didnt get into it, so I sold it and I still have Far Cry somewhere waiting for me, but the fact that Boll is planning a movie, makes me not wanna play it. I have only seen bloodrayne, mostly because I was sick of Boll saying:”Dont attack me if you havent seen the movie” Yeah, well, now I can, and people say its the best out of three. DAMN! I read somewhere that Boll said that people have been coming up to him and saying that Bloodrayne is better than Underworld Evolution. HELL NO! UE is 1000000000..infinity better :) IMO. Even without Kate in leather :)
Thank you God that Uwe doesnt have the rights to Halo, American McGee’s Alice, Half-life, Metal Gear Solid etc. And to all developers out there. Even if you dont care for your own games, dont sell the movie rights to Boll. Seriously.
The damn thing is, Boll criticized DOOM, which was a lot better than his films, and that’s not saying much, though I love the first person scene :)

As far as 10 million in unspent marketing money, I have no idea how true that is, but I do know that Uwe Boll rights it all off under Germany’s tax laws so the financiers are not out any money.

I’ve also heard that Zane’s company failed to spend a 10 million dollar sum that Uwe paid them that was supposed to go for marketing.
