See Free Movies At AMC

AMC free moviesHoly crap. Now this is a GREAT idea. It looks like the giant movie theater chain, AMC, is going to be putting on a free movie summer project. The good folks over at M&C give us this:

Well, kids and adults alike can enjoy free movies and entertainment Wednesday mornings this summer thanks to AMC’s “Summer MovieCamp” program. AMC Theatres will offer the community service program in 40 U.S. cities June 21, 2006, through August 9, 2006. AMC Summer MovieCamp in Charlotte, North Carolina, will run June 14, 2006, thru August 23, 2006. The box office will open at 9:30 a.m. with show times at 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

AMC Summer MovieCamp 2006 will feature select titles such as: ‘Racing Stripes,’ ‘Ice Age,’ ‘Because of Winn-Dixie,’ ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,’ ‘Dreamer,’ ‘Shark Tale,’ ‘Madagascar,’ ‘The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie,’ ‘Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed,’ ‘March of the Penguins,’ ‘Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit’and ‘Shrek 2.’

No, these aren’t first run movies, but still, if I could go see March of the Penguins on a BIG screen for free I’d go (even though I already own the dvd).

Thumbs up to AMC for doing this little programs. I’m not sure what they get out of it, but free movies are free movies. You probably have to put up with 30 minutes of trailers and commercials. Meh… who cares.

  1. I am supervisor at Friendship Corner II day Care and i would like to received information about free admission for the children at the day care every wednesday.
We are located in 186 Butler Street, Paterson NJ 07524
    our Phone number are: 973 405 6711, 973 405 6712
    Fax 973 405 6716

  2. Sealer – I’m not sure I’d say “Akelah and The Bee” is exactly a small movie. It was all over the place and what can be a bigger boost for getting the name out there – Starbuck promotions???? Akheela every time you step in to buy your $5 coffee? Yeah.

I love the idea of the free movies for kids. I hope that at some point down the line this is adopted in Vancouver.

I’d jump at the chance to see Spongebob on the big screen. Yeah Spongebob! For years I thought this was the dumbest show I’d EVER seen but then I caught the movie on one of the movie channels. Bloody funny!

  3. I’m not sure it would be so much fun for the non-kids. I think part of the reason behind this is that parents often can’t take their kids to general screenings because their kids scream/yell/cry and generally make the experience unpleasant for others. These kinds of screenings tend to be rambunctious, to say the least.

And if you’re wondering how they can afford to do it, the answer is that kids buy lots of junk food from the concession stands. They may make just as much from these screenings as they make from the regular ones, simply due to much higher concession sales.

  4. This happened last year for us (I’m near Springfield MA). It was the Regal theater chain. There were two different movies at 10 am on Tuesdays and Wednesdays all summer. Free admission and overpriced goodies – try getting a healthy lunch in your kids after popcorn and gummies at 10 am. I took the kids for free to Harry Potter 3 and The Wizard of Oz. It was the first time I ever saw The Wizard of Oz on the big screen. I was happier than the kids.

  5. What I like about the idea is that one of these films – “Dreamer” – wasn’t a huge hit. To give the film a showing on a big screen is a huge compliment. But when I read this list and see that “Dreamer” is the only one which underperformed…

What gets me is that I see SIX animated films, including “Shrek 2” which I don’t think is aimed at small children. This is not excuseable. Get a film like ‘Dreamer’ – or the recent “Akelah and The Bee” and it slips under the radar. Then someone will cry out to Hollywood that there are no family films out there. So Hollywood makes them and nobody goes!

Freakin’ Scooby Doo. That’s the bigger insult. Have the kiddies watch the original cartoons, they will be more happy.
