Robert Altman, one of 5 directors in Oscar history to be nominated 5 times for “Best Director” without ever winning it, will receive an honarary Oscar at this year’s awards ceremony. And all I can say is “Hell yes”.
This guy is a master filmmaker. His films are diverse, bold and tell stories in his own way. Films like M-A-S-H, Nashville, The Player, Short Cuts and Gosford Park are all his creations (although to be fair he also directed one of the worst films in the history of cinema, Dr. T and the Women. Yuck, my ass hurts just saying the title.
Say what you want about the Oscars, the one thing they do right just about every single year is the people they pick to recieve the lifetime and honorary awards. They’re always totally top notch people who belong in a film hall of fame (if such a thing existed). This choice is no different.
I see what your saying. I definitely like it better than giving an actual Oscar to someone because they should have won it for another movie (for instance, giving the Oscar to Denzel Washington for Training Day in 2001 when he should have gotten in for Malcom X in 1992).

I can see what you’re saying… but what is the alternative? So Altman is one of the great directors of all time. The fact of the matter is, that if he wasn’t the best director in any one particualr year… then he shouldn’t have an Oscar. That’s the beauty of the Honorary Oscar…
It allows the Academy to recognize a guy as great as Altman, who may be one of the best ever, and yet not the best in any one particular year.
Just a thought.

The honorary award seems like such a cop out though. It’s more like the “Oh shit, (insert name here) is considered one of the greatest filmmakers of his era, but we never gave him an award, so lets do it now before he croaks” award. I hope they’re saving one for Marty Scorsese.
