The Rock in Daddy’s Girl

Looks like The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) is lined up to play the lead in the new Disney project Daddy’s Girl. With the addition of this project to his queue, The Rock now has no less than SEVEN (7) movies in the works. Others include Blowback, Johnny Bravo (which I’m really looking forward too), Spy Hunter, Ride Along, Instant Karma, Gridiron Gang and Southland Tales. Gosh… you think The Rock was successful in making his jump to the big screen?

Now, the quality of The Rock’s movies is forever up for debate. Personally, I really enjoyed him in just about everything he’s been in up until the disaster that was DOOM. Is he a great thespian? Not a chance in hell, but he does have a magnetic charm and charisma on screen that makes it difficult not to like him.

The good folks over at Cinema Confidential have provided us with this little synopsis of Daddy’s Girl:

The story will follow a football player who learns that he has a daughter and embarks on his own journey in becoming a father.

Yeah, sounds like a sweet little family Disney film. Hit or miss. But it does look like something The Rock will fit right into.

The thing is… I was really convinced that they should have been positioning The Rock to be the next Stallone/Van Dame big violent action hero. Something like this seem a little to me like a step backwards. Your thoughts?

  1. All his movies have been very good. People need to remember that he is still new to Hollywood, so he is not going to get Academy Award winning roles just yet. They are all fun and great to watch if you are someone who isn’t uptight about every little aspect of a movie and have to criticise or critique everything. They have all been funny and are great to just sit down, relax, and have a good time watching. The character of Elliot in Be Cool was written for him, the author told him that. So it wasn’t the greatest movie ever, but it was funny, especially his part. What’s the fuss? Doom was not crap either. It has more of a storyline to it than anyone who hasn’t or won’t see the movie will ever know. It was exciting and took a couple turns that you might not be expecting. It’s not just about killing things for the sake of killing them like the video game, it has a point to it. Dwayne will continue to make great movies and if you have an open mind and relax, you will see that. Everyone’s a critic though and usually on movies they know nothing about, or are expecting some unknown thing from movies that they don’t appreciate a nice simple, sometimes funny, but always fun to watch movie when they have seen one.

  2. well to date:

Mummy Returns – nonfactor, bit part

Scorpion King – didnt see it yet, but might eventually. still in no rush.

the Rundown – awesome movie, but not one i really would buy probably. fun though. would watch again.

Walking Tall – also fun, but not as good. really short though, which actually is a good thing.

Be Cool – garbage movie he was the only good thing about. I read the book which is way different, and reading it with all the descriptions it seems that part was written just for him. in the book its all there, Samoan, does an eyebrow trick, everything…

Doom – havent seen it, but will. sure its obviously crap, but meh.

  3. I like The Rock! So far I have liked what I have see. So he does a falmily movie. He has that charm and lets not forget this guy is very sexy. He’ll do fine in whatever he does.

  4. Hmm.. The Rock in a football movie. Should be interesting. I think e would have gone pro if he hadn’t gotten injured in college. He ended up getting replaced by Warren Sapp, who of course ended up being like the best defensive tackle in the pros for a while. Tough to win a job back when the best replaces you.

I haven’t read up on it for a while, but I believe there was a story about him jumping into the stands and beating someone up during one of their games. You can never get enough of that :)

I’d be up for that if the folks making his action movies seemed to realize that he used to make his living seling fights that look good from a number of angles; unfortunately, Hollywood apparently isn’t up for that sort of action filmmaking. Which leaves his options as (1) go to Hong Kong and (2) do stuff that harnesses his charisma rather than his talent for ass-kicking. As mediocre as “Be Cool” was, Dwayne was a riot in it.
