The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Prequel

Back in late 2004 we mentioned that another Texas Chainsaw Massacre film was in development and that it would be set as a prequel. Looks like that is all still holding true and they’ve also just got themselves a director. I’m actually a little surprised it took them this long.

The guy behind the camera for this project is Jonathan Liebesman, who got some positive attention with his work on Darkness Falls.

So how on earth do you do a prequel to a film like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Well, the good folks over at Empire have an interesting (even if it’s sarcastic) idea:

The prequel will tell us something about the origins of the terrifying Leatherface, presumably focusing on his early career as an artist in pre-War Vienna – well, something like that – and how a sweet young man with a beautiful singing voice and angelic blonde hair (possibly) turned into a flesh-wearing, chainsaw-wielding homicidal maniac. Ah, the eternal story! But don’t worry – it isn’t all character development and psychological backstory. There’s lots of “teens in peril running for their lives” as well

Too funny! Still… I’m really not sure that I like the idea very much. Oh well… as usually I guess it’s a “wait and see” situation. To be honest I didn’t really like the first one all that much either.

  1. I think that both the original and remake of The Texas chain saw massacare were substancial films. A prequel em I don’t know if anyone besides Tobe Hooper could make that work you get Tobe Hooper you get an original feel and probably an alright flick.

  2. I loved both the original and remake of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. They were two different films and I liked them for different reasons. The original was raw and it felt like a documentary. The 2003 version held that darkness, but relied more on the concept of how evil these people were. It was well acted, shot beautifully, and was very tense. This prequel, am I excited to see it, um prequels aren’t usually good (i.e. “Exorcist: The Beginning” or “Amityville Horror II”).

  3. The original is classic, the re-make was lame and a prequel is unneccessary. I’d like to say it has promise, but I as of the moment I see yet another teen scream flick.
