Mira Sorvino and Joseph Fiennes in Civic Duty

josephFiennes.jpgEvery once in a while a story idea catches my attention. The plot for the upcoming Civic Duty is one of those. Apparently Mira Sorvina (damn fine actress who has been in a major slump), and Joseph Fiennes (just an awesome actor) are in talks to take the lead roles. Here’s the synopsis the good folks at Coming Soon give us:

When All-American accountant Terry Allen gets fired from his job, he develops an acute obsession with “Headline News” and “CNN” in the post 9/11 world. His world is about to get a whole lot smaller when a young, unattached Islamic student moves in next door.

When Terry’s obsession moves to his new neighbor and his theories fall on deaf ears, he decides to take matters into his own hands to determine exactly who this new neighbor is.

This is a gutsy story idea. They’ll have to be very careful with how they execute this, but if done well it could not only be a good film… but an important film too.

  1. Finally somebody grew some balls and is making this movie. My friend works at an agency and passed on a copy of the script. It really captures the paranoia we all felt after September 11th and they way we looked at anyone who we felt fit the racial profile. The story has all the great points of “Falling Down” and the Hitchcock elements of “Rear Window”.

Fiennes is long overdue for a role that doesn’t have him waxing poetic ala Shakespeare. As good as an actor as he is, why doe his management keep picking roles for him that have him doing the same thing over and over again. Show your range boy. Finally, they’ve done you good.
