Disney making Toy Story 3 & 4 simultaneously?

woodyBuzz.jpgOuch. John has expressed his previous concern over the Disney creation of Toy Story 3, and I do share those concerns wholeheartedly. Disney are on a huge loosing streak, and it’s not getting better, whatever the reasons they lack the ability to produce something that is worthy of a third in this franchise and must clearly stand next to The Incredibles with pride.

MovieBlog has previously carried news about Toy Story 3 (see both posts) but Hollywood Reporter are basically saying that Disney are about to rub Pixars nose into it:

Disney is in the process of setting up a digital animation facility in Glendale, not all that far from DreamWorks Animation’s digs, that will be used for the production of “Toy Story 3.”

If there was a concern that the movie wasn’t into production:

Andrew Millstein, who headed the company’s now-shuttered animation facility in Orlando, also is involved and has begun the process of recruiting animation heavyweights from rival animation studios and effects shops.

Makes sense, if they haven’t got the ability to make it themselves, bring in the talent. Could we see Pixar make a rival movie to make fun of theirs? Well with the number of Disney jokes and digs in previous movies, it wouldn’t surprise me.

What causes further concern is the additional information from Coming Soon dating back to an article in October:

Disney chief executive Michael Eisner said yesterday that Walt Disney Pictures is working on two new sequels in the “Toy Story” series at the same time. “We’re doing two ‘Toy Stories’ at once,” Eisner said.

A spokeswoman for Disney elaborated, saying, “They’re working on different story ideas with the hopes there will be a ‘Toy Story 3’ and another after that.”

I’ve just bowed my head slightly and shaken my head, and I’ve read the quote about five times while getting this article prepared! What do you think, can they possibly pull it off?

  1. I think that disney are running blind. It seems that they’re almost oblivious to the powerful talent of PIXAR. It’s all comes down to story talent, and unless they lift that game enormously, it’s all going to end in tears as it has done repeatedly in the past. It’s completely foolish of them to revisit the TOY STORY series! They’re not only going to hurt themselves, but timeless brilliance of TOY STORY 1 & 2…and not to mention the industry as a whole. It’s weak and disrespectful. GET SOME GOOD STORY PEOPLE AND WRITE SOMETHING FRESH!!!!!

  2. Why is it that when an excellent product is made, it needs to be repeated to death?
I believe the movies stand on their own as they are. Disney/Pixar productions. Disney will flood the market now and make Toy Story everyday crap as opposed to two great collectible, valuable movies like they are now.
Everyone forgets that Toy Story is the FIRST all computer generated animation. That credit belongs to Pixar and Disney and Toy Story.
If Dis and Pix’s relationship is over, then so should Toy Story!

  3. First of all, I would like to point out to Miles and all others that Disney did not have anything to do with Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron. That was a DreamWorks production.

With that out of the way, I would like to say that, thought Disney has not been as commercially successful as they used to be in their animated feature films, they are at least as critically successful. Although, I do have to admit, Disney does despirately need a change in direction, or at least a different approach.

I think doing Toy Story without Pixar is a mistake, though I’m not denying that they can do it, nor that they could do it well. Take a look at some of their recent films. The Emperor’s New Groove and Lilo & Stitch are prime examples of how Disney has taken animated comedy to a new level. Those films are every bit as interesting, entertaining, and sometimes heart-warming as Pixar’s films. I think Disney could do justice to Toy Story if it’s handled by competant writers and directors, and not just some nobody who’s hired for a cheap, quick script. Maybe they could tap into the character talents of Ted & Terry of Shrek and Pirates fame.

The other thing Disney needs to do is come up with a product that the original cast will want to be a part of. Bottom line here: IF TOY STORY CANNOT BE DONE WITH THE ORIGINAL CAST, THEN IT SHOULD NOT BE DONE AT ALL. I mean Patrick Warburton is good at playing Buzz and all, but Tim Allen created the character. And who could they possibly get to replace Tom Hanks?

If Disney plays their cards right and does not pass this off as a quick buck piece of schlock designed to market on popular characters (i.e. any of the Winnie The Pooh movies NOT overseen by Disney himself), than they might have a worthwhile product on their hands.

But I still stand by the fact that it would be better if they just let it go and stick to original ideas.

  4. i feel sorry for poor little disney, they are not such an evil corporation, and actaully, I think the computer animation cartoon market has enough big players.

why not stick to their regular animation? with current technologies they could make animatiin that looks better then anytign they have done before, they just need to pick some winning stories (as in not that spirit movie about the horse….that was a terrible movie….well, it was not that bad….actually i loved that horse!)

and you know what? sleeping beauty is one of my favourite movies all time, i know some slick computer generated film will never come close!!!
