The Butterfly Effect 3?

Butterfly 3 LgIt appears that The Butterfly Effect 3 has begun production… before I figured out that a second one even existed. We get the news this morning, from our friends at the moviehole:

A second straight-to-video sequel to the Ashton Kutcher/Time-Travel Mindfuck “The Butterfly Effect” is in the works.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The Butterfly Effect 3” (two points to the geniuses in the title department!), will actually get a short theatrical release (After Dark Films, which will distribute it theatrically in the U.S. as part of its After Dark Horrorfest “8 Films to Die For” series) before it goes wide at, er, Blockbuster.

I didn’t think The Butterfly Effect would be a film that would have a sequel at all, never mind a deuce. I suppose the film had a big enough audience to warrant the direct to DVD spinoffs, otherwise they wouldn’t happen; but I wouldn’t have guessed it. I am interested at the number crunching that goes into a direct to DVD film; how a film is selected for a direct to DVD launch would be a cool thing to find out

The glut of direct to DVD films will eventually give us some gold – but it’s going to take a lot of mining through garbage.

I think it is high time I went to the grocery store and looked in the bargain bin for some discount DVD gems.

  1. Well… I’m one of the B.E. sequel… but i really hate that every time this sequel gets “blooder” as if that word actually exists, lol.

The thing is that’d I loved the 1st one, the 2nd one really sucked up badly and the 3rd one although it had a nice ending (guy fixs it all up, regardless of what her daughter could do in the future) was full of blood and it’s really sick for our country. I mean, here in Perú we don’t like too much blood in movies, cause the point of going to the movies is to have a really good time with yar friends and family and I seriously doubt anyone can have a good one when the film is just full of blood and assasins =S.

Anyways, this movie wasn’t realesed in Perú and so I think that if there ever is a next chapter (B.E.4) movies won’t show it as they did with this one.

P.S: what the heck?????? they never said anything about lenin?… did he got out of jail, is he alive, can he actually walk?…… crap I just realized that’s an open ending, so ppl there is more Butterfly Effect comming soon, yay!!!

  2. (Warning: Minor Spoilers)

Trilogies are usually predictable. The first one has to be pretty good for the trilogy to exist. The second isn’t quite as good and the third goes down hill from there. Occasionally, as is the case with Final Destination, the second movie is as good as the first and the third slips a long way. In the Butterfly Effect we have the rare exception. The third movie is arguably better than the first, and considerably better than the second.
This movie is nicely complicated but the plot is still easy to follow. And what a plot it is. The maze of temporal changes is just delicious. What’s more, the temporal twists and turns avoid the tired clichés. You expect the obvious to happen and it simply doesn’t. This is such a welcome break. Despite the changes Sam makes to the past, most of the present stays relatively similar. This movie even avoids the cliché it is named after, where a small change in one place creates huge changes elsewhere. The Nazi’s never show up in this movie, no matter how much time travel takes place – thank you!
The plot is fantastic and much effort is made to befuddle the viewer as to who the killer in this murder mystery really is. At the same time plenty of legitimate clues are included. I must admit, because I was braced for a bad third movie, I expected one of the obvious choices to turn out to be the killer. I was greatly impressed with the ending.
Like the first two movies, there is a theme that time travel is bad. However, it is downplayed and overshadowed by how cool and functional time travel is. What’s more, time travel provides all the solutions for this thriller, although the director can’t help but include a final terrible cost.
The time travel brain damage is placed nicely in this movie. It threatens to overshadow everything and ruin the movie with a tired cliché and then backs off and vanishes. The movie also has a rather adult homage to Ground Hog day. This and plenty of gore give the movie its rating. Sam sleeps with an inviting young lady and then time twists around so they don’t know each other any longer.
The dialogue is well written and really drew me in. The time travel genre is rife with cheesy lines that easily could have been used. This movie manages to deliver some age old time travel scenes in a new way, going so far as to use a Scooby Doo reference that was both horrific and funny.
Like many movies, I would have liked five more minutes but instead, it leaves you wanting more. This is probably a good think, heck I know it is. It was the perfect time for an ending. Anymore and you would expect a second shoe to drop. While the director does leave a loose thread for a sequel but the movie wraps things up so nicely and it’s so well done, I just don’t see anyone pursuing that kind of cheesy angle for any further movies in this series.
I can’t believe this movie did not make it to theatres locally. Unfortunately Final Destination 3 and Butterfly Effect 2 put a lot of nails in the time travel movie coffin. Having just watched S Darko and the 2009 Land of the Lost, this is definitely the best time travel movie this year and in the last few.

  3. I’ve watched the 3rd part, and it was FUCKIN’ GOOD. after the 2cnd (really was shiitty) – the 3rd is really good.. I just don’t really get the end of BE 3.. so wicked.. and the story line was really sad in a few moments.. really good.. but still the first STAYS BEST

  4. I haven’t watched it yet… I’m going to get it right now though >=D. i hope that he doesn’t just go back to any time in his life he remembers… it should be like the first where he would black out anytime his older-self inhabited his younger body. So you DO see him with a knife standing there and then your like “wtf??? He don’t even remember it???”. But ohhh kaaay lets just see what thats all about. Thats what made it a good story… knowing that sooner or later he’s gonna fill in that space where when he finished with his blackout left him doin what he was

    let’s just hope it’s a goog one =)

  5. The director cut version of the first movie was as success ( The one with the sad ending ). I suggest you to watch it back. The second one was in revanche boring and not original at all.
With the third one,the serie BE just effectued a nice comeback with a original movie which surprised me until the end. I can’t believe it never appears in theater.

Conclusion : BE1 and BE3 merit to be watched at least once. Have fun !!

  6. Couldn’t they just call it “The Butterfly Effect 2: The Real One” or something? Cuz it was ovbious to everyone that the second sucked, so, let’s not count it, huh? The did it for the Hulk, why not here? :P I still hope it’s as good as the first and that it involves Jason Treborn, Evan’s father. I wanna know more about that photo album they “claimed” he had :)

  7. hey idiots,, the friggin movie has yet to be even finished filming, and you lot are already talkin shit! bunch of dumbasses,, how bout any one of you bother to see the thing before landing judgements on it. duh!

  8. I dont thing they can mess with the first
the second one was bullshit i stoped watching it cause it was boring
the first one was the shit
they should to a movie to that one
maybe about his brothers that dies
    about his father
    ther are ways

    1. i thought he was the 2 brothers that died coz they only died because they lived out their lives but then traveled back fucked it all up then killed em selves in the womb (wich was oober cool i think i prefer that ending) but the reason it kept happening is because the time line were left with is 3 misscaragise but they did live in a parralel timeling……you gotta love the chaos theory lol

  9. BE2 could have been alot better, but it wasn`t. Seriously how was BE1 worse than BE2 if you give me reasonable information on how BE2 was better that BE1 i will agree. They should have ended it differently than the 1st. They both die? That`s stupid, the movies have to end different than each-other. The first started and ended good. it starts off with you all confused like “what is this some insane old guy writing a note about saving ‘her’ what is this it`s pretty interesting i will have to watch until the end to understand” And at the end you go oooohhhhh now i get it. like him with the knife he`s like i don`t know why i have this knife in my hands. Then it shows him go back and go i will use this to destroy the blockbuster. the first was wayyyyy better than the second and i hope the third is as good or better than the first.

  10. Honestly though no the first one was wayyyyyyyy better. The second one was missing too many connections to the original to be anywhere near as good that pissed me off at first. Once I got passed the fact that it was a totally different story the movie wasn’t bad at all but still BE 1 is 10 times better. But regradless this needs to be a trilogy it just has to be. They left the second one off with such a good oportunity.

the first movie was so good its left me wanting to watch more movies as good as that 1 as for the second one it was no way near as good but kept me intrested

  12. Well I watched The Butterfly Effect 2 purely based on the concept. (I really like time-travel type movies) BE2 sucked a big one. The idea was not like the first one at all. I didn’t get how sometimes looking at the pictures would make him time travel and sometimes not. Plus all the memories that he would have in his new reality didn’t come to him like the first. Terrible knock off sequel, almost as stupid as Final Destination 2 and cruel intentions 2. The thing I don’t get is that they must be making money off these knock offs or they wouldn’t do em. I wonder if when they are making the movie everyone just half asses it because they all know its a quick money grab.

  13. (Type your comment here. Make sure you’ve read the commenting rules before doing so) i agree with bebe the first butterfly effect was much better than the 2nd. the first film had so much more action and a more gripping and intense storyline.
