Mortal Kombat Remake

Mortal-Kombat-WallpaperWe have news today that a Mortal Kombat re-envisioning is in the works?! We get the skinny this afternoon from moviesonline:

Today Clint Morris from Moviehole spoke with the new director behind the “re-envisioning” of the film, mink (Yea his name is really mink). Anyway he revealed that the Producers are working everything out at this point with the studio. He went on to talk about the project a little more:

“Todays audience is a savvy involved group so the film must be A plus plus in every area in order to capture the magic of the first film. It is taking the entire concept to the next level across the board in every area visual design, story, cast, FX, photography and most importantly the fighting scenes. The original Mortal Kombat game was born a child of many visual loves by the creators at midway so this latest version borrows heavily from that pioneering spirit and must be thought out and executed at the highest level in order for it succeed in today’s market place. This is no overnight task.”

I dislike Mortal Kombat. Other than the fatalities, nothing about the game excites me. The playability is horrible, the animation is strange and I just never got into the game. The first Motal Kombat film was bad, but was enjoyable in a “this is so bad” kind of way. The soundtrack was pretty good, it included a song by Napalm Death and i will certainly give them props for that.

I don’t think Mortal Kombat is a film that needs to be remade, and I am not certain that a Mortal Kombat movie would even draw people anymore. But if they told the story as a tournament style film, that would be the best possible option, and I would certainly gain interest. The elimination fighting tournament makes for very easy, and enjoyable action plot lines. Don’t clutter up the film with side stories, just stick to the tournament and have the film end with a champion. We will keep you posted on the news as the story develops.

  1. They should redo the whole movie series. The 1st movie should be based on the events and scenery of Mortal kombat 1. plus have the classic characters and the Bloody Gore.

  2. The re-make of the film “Mortal Combat” should bring out a lot of people to the theaters…If you look at movies like Spiderman, hulk and X men…will they all did great…new technologies effects and will also bring the movie together. Characters getting to do everything just like the game…but I do think they should not call it the 3rd film….just the beginning of how it all began…the first tourney. Film makers are making remake of movies like batman, star trek, hulk and superman…they did a lot great in the box office…so why not Mortal Combat….I can see it top the box office weekend…..

  3. MORTAL KOMBAT REMAKE.

Threshold Studios is reworking on the new Mortal Kombat film but the producers are working out the studios and money.
But Mink is still talking on the project which its in pre production so th new film will have a start with Kung Lao fighting against Goro then the new torurnament begins,Liu Kang Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade fight in Mortal Kombat.
There is no news on cast yet but new actors like Shin Koyamada he could play Liu Kang and maybe Jon Foo as Kung Lao.
Plus there will be new special effects for the new film and it will be a box office hit.
Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon will rewrite the script with Drew McWeeney and Scott Swan for the film and the shooting locations would be Thailand,China and Louisiana.
Threshold Studios would be interested on making more VG movies like Darkstalkers maybe.
    Thank you.

  4. Agreed Kevy G, this should be a brutal and violent film, in the true spirit of the game.

I’d love to see them tell the story of MK properly, the first film tried to be just a tournament film, and it was boring because of it. That’s only one element of the story behind MK.

The first game, and all the characters have a good story, and intertwined relationships and history. The game told these stories only in the character bios and end sequences, but for a film that should only have about 8 characters to flesh out, it shouldn’t be hard to tell the interesting story of MK well.

The best story in all of MK-lore is that of Sub-Zero and Scorpion. And the biggest thing wrong with the first MK film was that these two were FRIENDS, and nothing more than henchmen. So very, very wrong.

  5. i must say i was a huge MK fan,and i loved the first movie, although i think they messed up in the fatality department…the games are gory and bloody, the first or artoucious second movie hardly had any…i think they need to go back to the roots and realize why the game was huge in the first place…the gory fatalities!!!!…..btw, casting decision…jet li as liu kang would be fukin bad ass IMO

  6. Why? Because there’s live action Tekken movie that threaens us all? Because someone scooped up the rights to Bad Dudes or SoulCalibur?

What’s funnier is that mink is directing. For gosh sakes, can’t the person use his real name? I can understand when the dude directed <into The Sun with Steven Seagal, which wasn’t bad for a Seagal DTV film, but still, I can understand the pen name.

SHIT. Why not give Kaos a call.

BTW, for those interested, MK was realeased in 95.
BTW, for those interested, MK isn’t as big as it used to be.
    BTW, nobody is interested.

  7. Personally I like this idea far better then the horribly-troubled Mortal Kombat 3 movie that was more like the Little Train that Just Couldn’t in terms of trying to get off the ground and made.

As much as I liked the first movie (The second doesn’t exist as far as I’m concerned), this project has my interest. Not quite sure what to make of it overall yet, but my interest is there.

  8. doug i ask you again…are you going to see maiden in LA??

this tour is incredible……much better than the last tour..this is fucking classic maiden at its best

  9. Blasphemy!

The original Mortal Kombat game for SNES and Genesis was great. Graphics and controlled fighting like that had never been seen before. Most of the games that followed in the franchise though were pretty lame.

Good call though Doug on the tournament style movie, let’s hope they do it like that (intended sarcasm).
