Helen Mirren In National Treasure 2

Natinoal-Treasure-2-PosterNational Treasure wasn’t exactly a great movie… but even the most die hard of the film’s critics have to admit it at least have some fun in it. Personally, I thought the movie was ok. Not exactly classic filmmaking… but also not 2 hours I regretted spending in the theater.

I never imagined they would have a sequel to it, but it is on it’s way, and it seems to be working over times to add some credibility to itself in the casting department. Not only have they already landed Ed Harris, but it appears they’ve now snagged Oscar winner Helen Mirren. The good folks over at MovieWeb give us the following:

Also joining the cast is Ed Harris as the antagonist; the film brings back Nicolas Cage as treasure hunter Ben Gates and Jon Voight as his father, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha and Harvey Keitel. Jon Turtletaub also returns as director. The Hollywood Reporter notes National Treasure: Book of Secrets is set in motion when one of Cage’s ancestors is implicated in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, thrusting him into a globe-spanning adventure to clear his family name and find a missing treasure along the way.

The plot sounds a little screwy to me, but meh… it’s an adventure film so who really cares. I will say this, getting Mirren on board does raise my anticipation for the movie a little bit… and that’s saying something.

  1. I’m glad I saw the first one….on cable. Seriously, I would have been pissed if I had wasted what normally amounts to about $30.00US to see this film in the theaters. Fortunately I’ve become pretty adept at weeding out the mediocrity and just plain crap that Hollywood churns out and I smartly avoided this film just like I avoided Ghost Rider, and did someone actually admit to seeing Catwoman??

However I will admit that seeing it on cable for free (if you can call an $80.00 cable bill free) was not a painful experience. There was some fun to it, but I guess that could be attributed to there being so much CRAP on TV that it didn’t stick out as being bad or a waste of time. However, I would point out that ANY two episodes of Heroes and/or Battlestar Galactica are MUCH better than this film so I can’t imagine going to a theater, paying big bucks, and dealing with obnoxious idiots to see this film (and hence the sequel) when it’s not even as good as some TV shows.

P.S. I think it’s silly to go see a movie because of the actors. Actors don’t make movies. They star in them. Sometimes they star in good movies. Sometimes they star in bad movies. And sometimes they even act. Good actors will help make a good movie as good as it can be, but they can never make a bad movie good.

  2. The first one I thought was ok. It had a Indiana Jones feel to it, which was cool. Few other things here and their I liked about it, but thats about it. Glad I only saw it on cable thats for sure.

Don’t think I’ll see this one in theaters either. While I love Ed Harris as a bad guy and Jon Voight kicks ass too, still not enuff for me to care for another one of these films.

I will say it’s good for a family film, although far from the best, which is why the first one made so much money and ofcorse why they’ve made a 2nd one.

Whoopty damn do I say, but thats just me. ;p I hope it is good for everyone who does see it.

  3. I am literally looking forward to seeing this “National Treasure: Book of Secrets.” I hear that it will unlock many powerful codes and secrets behind huge bleep loads of treasure, literally.

I also hope they shall have black ninja assassins and bodybuilders. They are pretty sweet dudes.

  4. John,

You have the list, just how many sequels are coming out this year?

    National Treasure 2
    Spider Man 3
    Harry Potter 5
    Pirates 3
    Bourne 3
    Fantastic 4 – 2
    Bruce Almighty 2 Evan’s Revenge
    Are we done yet? 2
    Hills have eyes 2
    Resident Evil Extintion
    Letters from Iwo Jima
    Shrek the third
    Day watch

I’m sure I missed some. Is this getting out of control? Are there even more this year?

  5. “So, is this better or worse than Halle doing Catwoman after her Oscar win?”

Yes, methinks. Besides, she won’t be the actual LEAD in the movie, and I don’t suppose this movie will be as bad as CINO.
