A First Look at Dreams in Nightmares
The official poster for Dreams in Nightmares has been revealed. This upcoming project marks the sophomore feature from writer and director Shatara Michelle Ford, who previously gained recognition for their work on Test Pattern.
The film follows Z, played by Denée Benton, who embarks on a road trip across the Midwestern United States after an unceremonious layoff. Accompanied by two close friends, the group searches for a friend who has disappeared off the grid. As they travel, the Black queer group faces shapeshifting threats that test their priorities and expose personal and ideological fractures.
Expanding the Road Movie Genre
Described as an ode to chosen family, the film explores the radical act of claiming space to dream and exist within a fraught country. The project, which was an official selection at the 2025 Berlinale, is produced by a team including Pin-Chun Liu. You can view the official trailer for a deeper look at the tone of the film.
Following the poster reveal, the production team is hosting a virtual press day on July 21, 2026. The film, which is officially titled Dreams in Nightmares, features an ensemble cast that includes Jasmin Savoy Brown, Dezi Bing, Mars Storm Rucker, Sasha Compère, and Charlie Barnett.
This sophomore effort from Ford continues their exploration of complex interpersonal dynamics. By blending elements of comedy and drama, the film aims to offer a unique perspective on the traditional American road movie structure.
