NEON Sets December Release for Lagos-Set Drama Clarissa

NEON has announced that Clarissa will arrive in select theaters on December 11, 2026. The film serves as the second feature from directing duo Arie and Chuko Esiri, following their previous work on Eyimofe (This is My Desire).

The project, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Directors’ Fortnight section, is a reimagining of Virginia Woolf’s novel Mrs. Dalloway. Set in a contemporary African metropolis, the story follows a society woman named Clarissa, played by Sophie Okonedo, as she prepares to host a party in Lagos, Nigeria. The event leads to an unexpected reunion with friends from her youth, prompting a reflection on their shared past and personal aspirations.

A Notable Ensemble Cast

The film features a large ensemble cast assembled by casting director Nina Gold. Alongside Okonedo, the cast includes India Amarteifio, David Oyelowo, Ayo Edebiri, Toheeb Jimoh, Fortune Nwafor, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Jude Akuwudike, Danny Sapani, Modesinuola Ogundiwin, Chuks Joseph, Kehinde Cardoso, Jable Osai, and Joke Silva.

The production was written by Chuko Esiri and produced by Theresa Park of Per Capita Production, Nicholas Weinstock of Invention Studio, and the directors themselves. The technical team includes cinematographer Jonathan Bloom, editor Blair McClendon, and composer Kelsey Lu.

Why It Matters

Clarissa marks a significant addition to NEON’s 2026 slate, continuing the studio’s focus on international and auteur-driven cinema. Its selection for the Cannes Film Festival as only the second Nigerian feature in the event’s history highlights the growing global recognition of the filmmakers’ work. By transplanting the themes of Woolf’s classic literature into the complex sociopolitical landscape of modern Nigeria, the film offers a distinct perspective that has already garnered critical praise for its bold narrative approach.
