A new horror project is bringing two familiar faces back together on the big screen. Brie Larson is set to star in Skeletons, a thriller that marks her third collaboration with John Goodman. The two previously appeared together in 2014’s The Gambler and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island.
The film is directed by JT Mollner, known for his work on Strange Darling, and features a screenplay by Brian Duffield. The story is based on the short story Fail-Safe by Philip Fracassi. Joining Larson and Goodman in the cast are Kyle Gallner, Willa Fitzgerald, Ione Skye, and Daithí Ó Haragáin.
The development of this project has been a long road. J.J. Abrams originally boarded the adaptation in 2020, and while Universal Pictures previously held an option for the film, the project eventually moved forward under new leadership. Sony Pictures secured the worldwide rights to the film in early 2026 following a competitive bidding process. Principal photography for the production officially began on June 22, 2026.
What to Expect from Skeletons
The film is described as a modern take on creature horror. The narrative unfolds from the perspective of a young boy who begins to suspect that his parents are concealing a disturbing secret regarding his mother’s true nature.
The project is produced by Bad Robot Productions, Infrared, and Assemble Media. In addition to Abrams, the production team includes Drew Simon, Jon Cohen, and Jack Heller. Larson and Fracassi are also serving as executive producers alongside Caitlin de Lisser-Ellen, Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, and Duffield.
While the cast and creative team are now firmly in place, a release date for the film has not yet been announced. Fans of the genre will likely be watching closely to see how this creature feature develops as it moves through production.
