A new television adaptation of the classic story Army of Shadows is currently in production, with filming recently spotted in Liverpool. This latest take on the material moves away from the 1969 film’s historical setting to offer a contemporary perspective.
A Modern Resistance Story
Produced by Two Cities Television, StudioCanal, and Channel 4, the six-episode series reimagines the narrative in a near-future Britain under de facto American occupation. Instead of the French Resistance, the story follows a former British Army officer who organizes a covert cell of young recruits fighting to reclaim their country. The project has received support from the estates of original author Joseph Kessel and filmmaker Jean-Pierre Melville.
Behind the Scenes
The series is spearheaded by showrunner Ronan Bennett, who recently worked on the adaptation of The Day of the Jackal. While production is well underway, the studio has kept the details regarding the cast under wraps. Two Cities Television executives Michael Jackson and Stephen Wright noted that the series aims to tap into current feelings of political frustration and social discontent.
Recent reports from Europe Says confirm that filming took place this week on Lark Lane in Liverpool, where set photos captured scenes involving armed officers near the Old Police Station. This adaptation marks a significant departure from the source material, trading the historical context of Nazi-occupied France for a speculative, high-tension future.
