The latest installment in the long-running animated franchise, Minions and Monsters, is seeing a softer-than-expected start at the domestic box office. The film, produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal, is tracking toward a five-day opening of $63.5 million, falling short of the $80 million projections initially hoped for by the studio.
This performance marks the lowest opening for a film in the Despicable Me and Minions franchise, both in terms of its three-day and five-day debut. While the film easily secured the number one spot at the box office this weekend, the numbers represent a significant dip compared to previous franchise entries that opened over the July 4th holiday stretch.
Franchise Context and Performance
Despite the slower domestic start, the film is expected to reach at least $101 million worldwide when accounting for its international performance. Historically, the franchise relies heavily on overseas markets, which typically account for more than 60 percent of the total box office haul for these films. The sequel, directed by Pierre Coffin, who also provides the iconic voices for the characters, currently holds an A- CinemaScore.
The box office landscape remains competitive, with Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 holding the second spot in its third weekend. Meanwhile, the Angel Studio and Wonder Project release Young Washington is performing ahead of projections, and Warner Bros and DC Studios’ Supergirl continues to face a steep decline in its second frame.
Looking Ahead
While the domestic numbers for Minions and Monsters are lower than the studio’s previous high-water marks, the franchise has a proven track record of longevity. With the film expanding into 69 territories globally, the international box office will be the primary driver for its ultimate financial success. Whether this entry can eventually join its predecessors in the billion-dollar club remains to be seen as it continues its theatrical run.
