James Handy, Top Gun: Maverick Actor, Dies at 81 After Stabbing

James Handy, the bartender Jimmy in the 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, died at 81 following a stabbing incident in Tarzana, Los Angeles. Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder.

Authorities responded to a 911 call around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday and found Handy unconscious in the front yard of a home on Erwin Street. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The incident was reported by NBC News and Deadline.

Suspect Arrested

The suspect, 44‑year‑old Michael Gledhill, flagged down officers and identified himself as the individual they were looking for. He was taken to Van Nuys Jail on suspicion of murder, with bail set at $2 million. Detectives say the case appears isolated with no ongoing threat to the public.

Career Highlights

Handy’s talent agent, Pam Ellis‑Evenas, confirmed his death in a statement. The New York‑born actor amassed more than 150 credits since the 1970s, appearing in films such as Arachnophobia, Jumanji, The Rocketeer, Logan and Unbreakable. He also guest‑starred on TV series including NYPD Blue, Law & Order, Criminal Minds and NCIS: Los Angeles.

Handy’s passing marks the loss of a prolific character actor whose work spanned four decades.
