With Predator: Badlands set to arrive on November 7 starring Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster Koloamatangi, the iconic extraterrestrial hunter is once again stalking pop culture. The film has already become a hot topic at conventions and fan events, so it is the perfect time to revisit the legacy, rules, and mystery behind the Predator species. Whether you are a long-time fan or exploring this universe for the first time, here is a guide to help you step into the hunt fully prepared.
Who Are the Predators
Predators, also called Yautja, originate from the planet Yautja Prime. Their home world is a harsh desert environment that shaped them into physically powerful beings with exceptional strength, endurance, and hunting instincts. Hunting is not a hobby for them. It is the foundation of their culture and identity.
Weapons and Technology

Predators are master hunters with advanced technology that may look ritualistic but serves lethal purpose. Their most recognizable tools include the shoulder mounted plasma cannon, retractable wrist blades, a spear that can extend for close and long range combat, razor sharp throwing discs, and a net that tightens with enough force to cut through almost anything.
Their helmets contain thermal vision and audio mimicry capabilities. They can also cloak themselves to become nearly invisible, making them terrifying stalkers.
The Code of Honor
Predators do not hunt everyone. They believe that a hunt must be earned. They only target prey that poses a challenge or is capable of fighting back. They do not kill children, pregnant individuals, the elderly, or anyone who is sick or incapacitated. A hunt without challenge has no value to them.
Trophies and Status

After a successful hunt, a Predator may take trophies such as skulls and spines. These trophies are prized and displayed to show rank and prestige within their society. The more dangerous the kill, the greater the honor. In Predator 2, a Xenomorph skull was shown among the trophies, connecting the Alien and Predator universes and confirming that the Yautja actively seek the most deadly prey across the galaxy.
Self-Destruction Protocol
If defeat becomes unavoidable, a Predator will activate a self-destruction device. This prevents their technology from falling into the hands of others and ensures that they control the end of their hunt.
What Is a Notable
A human who defeats a Predator in honorable combat is considered a Notable. This rare respect means they are recognized by Predator clans and are never hunted again. Danny Glover’s character in Predator 2 receives a centuries-old pistol as a symbol of acknowledgment. In Alien vs Predator, Sanaa Lathan’s character becomes a Notable as well, bonding with a Predator in battle.
Weaknesses

Predator vision is based on heat signatures, which means blocking body heat can hide someone from detection. In Predator, Dutch uses mud to mask his heat signature. In Prey, cooling herbs lower body temperature to achieve the same effect.
Different Vision Modes
Predator helmets can switch to other visual spectrums. For example, in Predator 2, one Predator uses modes that detect weapon energy instead of body heat.
Predator Variants
Not all Predators follow the code. Those who betray the hunting honor system are called Bad Blood Predators. These outcasts are often larger, more violent, and genetically modified. They are hunted by other Yautja to restore balance and pride to the clans.
Duels of Honor
When facing a worthy opponent, a Predator may remove its armor and weapons to engage in a final one on one duel. This is a sign of deep respect. Dutch earns this moment in the original film, and similar duels appear throughout the franchise.
Why Predator: Badlands Matters
This new story explores uncharted territory in Predator lore. The film follows a young Predator exile who forms an unlikely alliance while searching for the ultimate challenge. The idea of an outcast Predator seeking purpose opens the door to new emotional, cultural, and mythological exploration for the franchise.
The hunt is evolving. And the galaxy is about to feel it.
