28 Years Later Review Danny Boyle Alex Garland (19)

28 Years Later Part II: Nia DaCosta’s Vision Brings Infected Action

The Reunion of Boyle and Garland

Nia DaCosta’s Vision

The second film will be directed by Nia DaCosta, who recently earned acclaim for her work on other high‑profile projects. DaCosta recently told a film festival audience that she asked Garland to add more infected characters to the script.

DaCosta said (with thanks to The Hollywood Reporter for the transcription), “Making the 28 Years Later sequel was one of the best filmmaking experiences I’ve had. One of the issues I had with Candyman and Marvels was the lack of a really solid script, which is always gonna just wreak havoc on the whole process. But Alex Garland hands you a script, and you’re like, ‘This is amazing.’ You don’t really have to change it, although I did, I basically asked for more infected. [Laughs.] That was, like, my big contribution. I inherited an amazing cast, then I was given the leeway to cast the rest of the film. There were a couple of locations I inherited. I was given the leeway to develop all the other locations. Some of it overlapped, like the character Samson — Danny and I would collaborate a bit on the look, but at the end of the day, Danny shoots so different from the way I shoot.“

More Infected, More Action

Adding more infected creatures could beat great thing. Viewers will see new ways the virus spreads, evolves, and how the survivors respond.

The film will launch in theaters on January 16, 2026. Each movie in the trilogy has a budget of around $60 million, thanks to a partnership with Sony. The first film in the series earned $150 million worldwide, so investors are confident that this sequel will perform well.

What Fans Can Expect

Expect a blend of classic zombie horror and modern filmmaking techniques. The story will follow the characters from the first film, adding new allies and enemies that were hinted at in the first film. Fans will also see familiar faces, such as Cillian Murphy, who returns as an executive producer.

With a strong writing team, a talented director, and a clear focus on the infected, ‘28 Years Later Part II’ promises to deliver the thrills that fans want.
