Matt Smith Joins Star Wars: Starfighter as the Villain

British actor Matt Smith has officially joined the cast of Star Wars: Starfighter, the upcoming film from Shawn Levy and Lucasfilm. Smith will play a villainous role in the standalone adventure, which takes place roughly five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

About Matt Smith’s Star Wars Debut

Smith’s casting marks a second brush with the Star Wars franchise. Although he was previously rumored to appear in The Rise of Skywalker, the role never materialized. However, the actor expressed his excitement to join the new film, stating that it will be a transformative Star Wars story detail.

Star Wars: Starfighter Overview

The film is being written by Jonathan Tropper, who previously collaborated with Levy on The Adam Project and This Is Where I Leave You. Tropper’s experience in blending emotion, action, and character will undoubtedly bring a unique touch to the Star Wars universe.

Starfighter takes place in a galaxy still reeling from the end of the Skywalker saga. The film will introduce fresh faces and a new story, carving new legends in the process. Production is set to begin this fall, with a theatrical release planned for May 28, 2027.
