The highly anticipated Kingdom Hearts 4 has officially received a confirmed release window. During a dedicated franchise panel at D23, developers reaffirmed that the next major entry in the beloved action-RPG series is slated to arrive in late 2027. This update provides fans with a clearer timeline for the game, which will be available on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
The announcement was accompanied by a four-minute extended version of the trailer that debuted earlier during the event. This longer look offered a deeper dive into the game’s mechanics and environments, specifically highlighting the world based on Pixar’s Coco. The footage showcased Sora engaging in the series’ signature action-RPG combat, now featuring new traversal actions and the ability to fight alongside characters like Hector and Miguel.
Beyond the core gameplay, the extended trailer revealed that players will occasionally control characters other than Sora. The footage highlighted segments featuring Donald and Goofy navigating the world of Coco independently. Additionally, the developers introduced a unique gameplay style for Mickey Mouse, which incorporates puzzle-based design elements that allow players to transform into different versions of the character, including a paper-thin origami form. This shift in mechanics promises a fresh approach to exploration within the franchise.
Developer Insights and Franchise Legacy
The D23 panel featured Tetsuya Nomura and co-director Tai Yasue, who shared insights into the development process and the criteria used for selecting Disney worlds to adapt. Nomura also teased that the upcoming title will finally realize a concept the team has been developing since the production of Kingdom Hearts 3. The presentation served as a significant milestone for the project, which was first teased in 2022 and has since become a major focal point for Square Enix.
The event also celebrated the long-standing history of the series. Voice actors Haley Joel Osment, who voices Sora, and David Gallagher, the voice of Riku, appeared on stage to discuss their experiences with the franchise. In a special moment for fans, the pair performed the final scene from Kingdom Hearts 2 live, marking the first time they have voiced a scene from the series together in person. Japanese voice actor Miyu Irino also contributed via a pre-recorded video message.
Expanding the Kingdom Hearts Universe
While the focus remained on the upcoming game, the panel also touched upon the broader future of the franchise. It was confirmed that a Kingdom Hearts anime series is currently in development for Disney Plus. While this project is officially in the works, the studio has not yet provided a specific release window for the adaptation. As the 2027 launch for the fourth mainline game approaches, fans can expect further details on both the game and the expanded multimedia plans for the series.
