The Michael Jackson biopic has officially reached a major cinematic milestone. Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International announced that the film has surpassed $1 billion at the worldwide box office. This achievement marks the second film of 2026 to reach the billion-dollar mark globally.
Through Sunday, the film has grossed $1.0016 billion, with $371.8 million coming from domestic markets and $629.8 million from international territories. The production is now officially the highest-grossing biopic of all time, surpassing the previous record held by Graham King’s Bohemian Rhapsody.
A Historic Run for the Biopic
The success of the film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, highlights the continued strength of the theatrical experience. It set records in 85 territories worldwide, including 31 records for biopics and 55 records for musical biopics. The film remains in theaters, with its recent performance in Japan helping push the total over the $1 billion threshold.
For Lionsgate, this represents the highest-grossing film in the studio’s history and its first to reach the billion-dollar mark. Universal Pictures International, which handled distribution in most international markets, noted that this is their second film to achieve this status in 2026.
Reflecting on the Milestone
Producer Graham King expressed his gratitude for the global response, noting the joy the film has brought to audiences of all ages. Director Antoine Fuqua echoed these sentiments, describing the achievement as a humbling moment that honors the vision of the cast, crew, and partners involved in bringing the story to the screen.
The film stars Jaafar Jackson in his feature film debut, alongside a cast that includes Nia Long, Colman Domingo, and Miles Teller. It was written by John Logan and produced by King, John Branca, and John McClain.
