More than a decade after his last feature film sparked an international controversy, Seth Rogen is preparing to return to the director’s chair. The actor and filmmaker has spent the last ten years focusing on his work as a writer, producer, and performer, but he is now looking toward his next project as a director.
A Return to Directing
Rogen shared his plans during the premiere of his latest comedy, The Invite, on June 24. He acknowledged that the fallout from his 2014 film, The Interview, which he co-directed with Evan Goldberg, made him hesitant to take on directing duties again. The satire, which depicted an assassination attempt on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, led to significant geopolitical tension and a major cyberattack on Sony Pictures.
Before that incident, Rogen and Goldberg made their directorial debut with the 2013 apocalyptic comedy This Is the End. Rogen noted that his recent experience directing episodes of television, including his series The Studio, helped him regain the confidence needed to consider another feature film.
Looking Ahead
Rogen confirmed that he and his creative partners are discussing the possibility of directing a film as early as next year. He joked about the current state of the industry, suggesting that their past controversies are no longer the primary concern in Hollywood.
For now, Rogen is focused on his role in The Invite, directed by Olivia Wilde. The film follows a struggling couple who host a dinner party that descends into chaos, featuring a cast that includes Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton. The project marks another step in Rogen’s busy career as he balances his various roles in front of and behind the camera.
