Top Actors Skip Luca Guadagnino’s American Psycho

Luca Guadagnino is preparing a new version of American Psycho. The studio still searches for an actor to play Patrick Bateman. Recent reports show that several A list actors turned down the part. They said the role feels too close to Christian Bale’s iconic performance. As a result, the casting process has slowed down.

Script Rewrite

Bret Easton Ellis, the novel’s author, shared details on his podcast. He explained that the first script did not meet the expectations of the actors who were approached. Consequently, the writers created a fresh draft. The new version aims to give a different tone and fresh perspective on the story. Ellis promised that this rewrite will make the film stand apart from the 2000 movie directed by Mary Harron.

The upcoming film will still follow the core premise of Ellis’s 1991 novel. Patrick Bateman works as an investment banker by day and becomes a ruthless killer by night. He balances a polished lifestyle with violent fantasies. However, Guadagnino plans to explore new angles. He wants to highlight the darkness of 1980s Manhattan without copying the earlier adaptation.

Actors Considered

Industry sources mentioned Austin Butler as a strong candidate. He entered negotiations after Deadline reported his interest. Yet, recent updates say he is no longer attached to the project. Other names have circulated, but none have been confirmed. The producers remain hopeful that the right talent will emerge once the script settles.

Guadagnino recently finished filming the Sam Altman biopic Artificial. That project should arrive in theaters this fall. He may move on to American Psycho soon after. Lionsgate backs the film and hopes the new script will attract a leading actor. The studio believes the fresh take will excite both fans of the novel and new audiences.

Overall, the project faces two main challenges: finding an actor willing to step into a role made famous by Christian Bale, and delivering a script that feels original. If Guadagnino succeeds, the film could become a bold reinterpretation of a cultural classic. Fans should watch for further casting announcements in the coming months.
