During a recent Hot Ones interview, Daniel Radcliffe shared a story that sounds like a movie plot. He said that while the Harry Potter movies ruled the box office, a producer approached him, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint with a strange offer. The producer wanted to remake the classic Wizard of Oz using the three actors. Watson would play Dorothy, Radcliffe would become the Cowardly Lion, and Grint would fill another role that Radcliffe could not recall.
Radcliffe explained that the pitch arrived at a time when the Potter franchise dominated pop culture. He remembered the meeting vividly. The producer described a version of Oz where the lion practiced karate. Radcliffe laughed as he recalled the absurd image of a karate kicking lion. He felt the idea was wild, but he also sensed trouble.
Radcliffe said he was only fourteen or fifteen when he heard the plan. He told the interviewer that he did not understand the film business well, but his gut told him the concept would fail. He said, “I thought it was a bad idea and it should not be made.” He added that the combination of a karate lion and a teenage wizard cast sounded like a mismatch.
What Actually Happened With Oz On Screen
That particular project never moved beyond the pitch. Hollywood later tried to revive Oz with the 2013 prequel Oz the Great and Powerful. Sam Raimi directed the film and cast James Franco, Mila Kunis and others. The movie earned close to five hundred million dollars worldwide. More recently, the Wicked musical adaptations hit theaters in 2024 and 2025, pulling in over a billion dollars combined. Those successes show that Oz can still draw crowds when handled with care.
Where the Cast Is Now
Radcliffe, Watson and Grint remain best known for the eight Harry Potter movies released from 2001 to 2011. The trio later reunited for a special anniversary event called Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. The event streamed on HBO Max in early 2022. Since then, each actor has pursued separate projects. Radcliffe continues acting in film and theater, Watson works on activism and acting, and Grint appears in television series.
