Trump Presses Paramount to Revive Controversial Rush Hour Sequel

The news that Donald Trump has asked Paramount to greenlight a fourth Rush Hour film has set off a buzz across Hollywood. Trump told the studio owner that the buddy‑cop franchise deserves a new chapter. He believes the sequel can draw big crowds in the United States and China.

The Brett Ratner Factor

Brett Ratner first entered the conversation when producers pitched the sequel to several studios. Ratner directed the earlier Rush Hour movies and many fans still link him to the brand. However, his involvement sparked backlash after the 2017 #MeToo movement. Multiple women accused Ratner of misconduct. He denied the claims and no charges were filed, but studios dropped him quickly. The allegations still make his name a hot topic.

Why Paramount Is Cautious

Paramount received the Rush Hour package before the Ellison family and Skydance took control of the studio. At that time, executives called Ratner a nonstarter. The new owners now face pressure from Trump, who has long supported Ratner. Trump also praised Ratner for directing a $40 million documentary about Melania Trump for Amazon and for filming Tower Heist at Trump Tower.

The original Rush Hour trio earned over $850 million worldwide. Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker built a loyal fan base with their mix of action and comedy. The movies performed especially well in China, a market that many Hollywood studios chase. Fans have heard Chan and Tucker say that a fourth film remains in development. Tucker recently listed the sequel as a future project.

What Could Change?

If Trump’s request succeeds, Paramount will need to weigh the potential profit against the risk of negative publicity. The studio might consider attaching a new director to avoid the Ratner controversy. They could also explore fresh story ideas that appeal to both U.S. and Chinese audiences.

Social media users have mixed feelings. Some celebrate the chance to see Chan and Tucker back on screen. Others worry that political influence could override creative decisions. Critics also note that reviving a franchise with a troubled producer may send the wrong message.

The next few weeks will reveal whether Paramount moves forward. If the studio greenlights Rush Hour 4, it will likely announce a new director and a revised production plan. Fans will watch closely for updates on casting, script details, and release dates.
