Ke Huy Quan Reveals Exciting Goonies Sequel Script Progress

The Goonies first hit screens in 1985 and quickly became a beloved kids adventure. Fans still talk about the treasure hunt, the underground tunnels, and the pirate One‑Eyed Willy. The original cast included Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan. Over four decades, the movie has earned a cult following and sparked endless rumors of a sequel.

Why a Sequel Matters

Every fan hopes to see the misfit crew return for another quest. A new film would let the actors revisit their iconic roles and introduce fresh characters. The excitement builds each year as the 40th anniversary approaches.

New Script Progress and Creative Team

In February, Potsy Ponciroli, the writer behind Old Henry, signed on to draft the follow‑up to Richard Donner’s classic. Ponciroli shared an update in August. He said the first draft has been delivered and received strong praise from the studio.

Key Players Behind the Scenes

Chris Columbus now works with Steven Spielberg to develop the project. The duo brings decades of adventure filmmaking experience. They have also secured an “incredible writer” for the second draft, according to recent reports.

Ke Huy Quan Shares Hopeful Update

While promoting his role in the Zootopia sequel, Ke Huy Quan gave fans a fresh glimpse of the Goonies future. He told ComicBook.com that he first learned about the sequel when he saw Spielberg at an event. Quan said Spielberg showed great excitement and that the team is actively working to make the film happen.

What Quan Said

“I first heard about it when I saw Steven Spielberg at an event and he was so excited. We try to do it, so let’s manifest it. I know we’ve been trying for the last 40 years, but I feel quite good about it,” Quan explained. He added, “This time, Chris Columbus and Spielberg are developing it, we have an incredible writer. I read he turned in the second draft and they’re really happy about it. I want my former co‑star Fortune Feimster to join, and I would love to revisit my character and go on another adventure with my Goonies brothers and sisters.”

What Fans Can Expect

Quan’s comments suggest the script is moving forward and that the studio supports the project. If the second draft impresses the producers, the sequel could enter pre‑production soon. Fans can look forward to new treasure maps, fresh villains, and a modern take on the original spirit.

Overall, the combination of a seasoned writer, veteran directors, and the original cast’s enthusiasm creates strong momentum for a Goonies sequel. The next few months will reveal whether the script advances to filming.
