Netflix has added hundreds of movies in the last ten years, but only a few have ever reached a disc format. Fans can now breathe a sigh of relief because Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that his new film Frankenstein will get a physical release. The director answered a fan on X and promised that the deleted convent scene will appear on the disc version.
Why a Physical Release Matters
Physical media gives collectors a way to own a film forever. Streaming services can remove titles at any time, and a disc protects the movie from disappearing. A Frankenstein physical media release also lets fans watch the film in high quality without relying on internet speed. In addition, a disc often includes extra scenes, commentary, and artwork that enhance the viewing experience.
Criterion Collection as a Likely Partner
There is no official word on which company will publish the Frankenstein Blu ray, but the Criterion Collection stands out as a strong candidate. Criterion has already issued several del Toro titles such as Cronos, The Devil’s Backbone, Pan’s Labyrinth, Nightmare Alley, The Shape of Water and Pinocchio. The label also handles many Netflix original physical releases, including Roma, Beasts of No Nation, Uncut Gems, Okja, The Irishman, Marriage Story, Mudbound and The Power of the Dog. Because of this track record, it is easy to see a Frankenstein physical media release joining their catalog.
What Makes Criterion a Good Fit
Criterion focuses on preserving cinema history. The company creates high quality discs with extensive bonus material. Fans of del Toro appreciate the care that Criterion puts into each edition. If they add Frankenstein, the set will likely include the deleted convent scene, behind the scenes footage and director commentary.
What Critics Said About Frankenstein
Our own reviewer Chris Bumbray saw Frankenstein at the Toronto International Film Festival. He praised the film’s visual style but noted that the first half felt long. He wrote, “While I cannot call this my favorite Frankenstein adaptation, the drawn out opening tested my patience. Once the story finds its footing, the second half becomes close to brilliant. The film may start uneven, but it grows into a powerful experience that rewards a patient viewer.”
What Comes Next for Del Toro
Del Toro recently hinted at a new project that will reunite him with Frankenstein star Oscar Isaac. He told fans, “I am writing a project with Oscar. It is called Fury and it returns to the thriller feel of Nightmare Alley. It is very cruel and very violent, like My Dinner with Andre but with killing people after each course.” This tease shows that the director remains busy and that Frankenstein fans may see more collaborations soon.
