Teaser reveals Netflix release date
The first teaser trailer for Last Samurai Standing dropped this week. Netflix announced that the Japanese historical drama will stream on November 13 2025. The teaser shows a gritty Meiji period setting and introduces the lead character Shujiro Saga played by Junichi Okada. Okada also serves as a producer on the series, adding personal investment to the project.
Shogo Imamura created the original Ikusagami novels that inspired the show. He told Netflix that he wrote the story to reach a global audience. He added that seeing his work on a streaming platform felt like a dream. The director team includes Michihito Fujii, Kento Yamaguchi, and Toru Yamamoto. Together they aim to bring authentic samurai action to a modern audience.
Netflix highlighted the series as a flagship Japanese drama for the upcoming season. The platform expects strong viewership because the story mixes family drama, high stakes competition, and historical intrigue. The competition pits Shujiro against 291 rivals for a prize of 100 billion yen. This premise promises tension and excitement for viewers.
New cast members join the series
The production announced five new cast members this month. Gaku Hamada will portray Superintendent General Toshiyoshi Kawaji. Tetsushi Tanaka takes on the role of Bureau of Communications chief Hisoka Maejima. Arata Iura appears as Home Minister Toshimichi Okubo. Taiiku Okazaki joins as Jinroku Keage, and Ayumu Nakajima plays Okubo’s secretary Shinpei Nagase.
These additions broaden the political landscape of the story. They give the series depth beyond the central competition. Fans of Japanese period pieces will recognize many of the actors from previous drama hits.
Last Samurai Standing will consist of six episodes. The 30th Busan International Film Festival added the show to its On Screen section. The first two episodes will screen at the festival on September 18 2025. This early showing builds buzz before the Netflix debut in November.
Overall, the teaser and cast news suggest that Last Samurai Standing will be a compelling blend of history and thriller. Viewers can look forward to high production values, strong performances, and a story that honors the Ikusagami novel roots while appealing to a worldwide audience.
