Discover the New Star Wars Manga Kickstarter
Dark Horse Comics and Lucasfilm have launched a star wars manga kickstarter that celebrates a historic manga adaptation. The project brings Hisao Tamaki’s original art boards to fans for the first time. Moreover, backers can receive exclusive editions before the retail release in 2026.
In 1997, Tamaki set out to re‑imagine Star Wars: A New Hope in manga form. His work earned an Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of Foreign Material. Today, Dark Horse has scanned each page with care. Consequently, the new book offers a clear view of the creative process.
Edition Options for Backers
The campaign features several deluxe editions. First, the Collector’s Edition includes two hardcover volumes, a Kickstarter‑only cover, and a fresh English translation taken from Tamaki’s handwritten Japanese text. The books use archival quality paper to showcase his linework.
Second, the Collector’s Edition Tamaki Variant limits production to 260 sets. It presents a minimalist design that highlights the art. Third, the Collector’s Edition + Slipcase adds a custom black slipcase for protection.
For the most devoted fans, the Deluxe Signed Collector’s Edition offers only 250 copies. Each set arrives signed by the creators.
The Masterpiece Edition delivers the original art at full size, 10.85 × 15.05 inches. It includes a companion book with a new translation of the Japanese lettering. The edition is housed in a faux‑leather clamshell case.
Additionally, the Signed Masterpiece Edition limits production to 250 sets, while the Signed Darth Vader Masterpiece Edition caps at just 25 copies. Both versions add exclusive enhancements for collectors.
Special Prints and Folios
Backers may also add the Tamaki Art Print Set. This set contains six prints, each reproduced in full color to capture every nuance of the original boards. Furthermore, the Tamaki Art Triptych Folio offers a three‑panel layout that matches the height of the Masterpiece Edition.
