Red Sonja: The Sword-Wielding Warrior Makes a Gritty Comeback
The legendary sword-wielding warrior Red Sonja is hoping to make a fierce comeback with a new movie. New behind-the-scenes footage and an image from the upcoming film give fans another look at Matilda Lutz in action, fully suited in the character’s iconic chainmail bikini.

The movie looks like it’ll give us some brutal fights, striking imagery, and a reimagining of the heroine that I hope ends up being good. This reboot is shaping up to be a gritty and stylized project.
A New Era for Red Sonja
This version of Red Sonja draws from the Dynamite Entertainment comics rather than Marvel’s original take, pushing the character in a more self-empowered and less objectified direction.
Lutz emphasized this shift saying it’s ‘a completely different story’ and that it moves away from the ‘male gaze’ of the original comic interpretations.
The Film’s Narrative
Enslaved by an evil tyrant who wishes to destroy her people, barbarian huntress Red Sonja must unite a group of unlikely warriors to face off against Dragan The Magnificent and his deadly bride, Dark Annisia.
Directed by M. J. Bassett and rated R for ‘strong/bloody violence’, Red Sonja will hit U.S. theaters on August 13, 2025, followed by a digital release likely arriving August 29.
