Netflix Announces $200 Million Investment in Thai Productions
Netflix revealed its first Impact Report for Thailand on a Wednesday press event in Bangkok. The report shows the streamer has put $200 million into Thai film and series projects. The money helped create 20 titles and hired more than 13,500 cast and crew members between 2021 and 2024.
Impact on Jobs and Creative Talent
The investment has sparked a wave of new jobs across the Thai creative sector. Local writers, directors, editors and technicians now have more opportunities to work on high‑profile projects. Netflix also partners with the Creative Economy Agency to run a Content Lab that teaches emerging creators. The Lab equips talent with new skills and helps the country meet its goal to upskill 20 million people by 2027.
Netflix plans to release nine Thai originals in 2025. Six of these are films, including the newly released Gold Rush Gang and the upcoming Same Day with Someone. The three series are Dalah: Death and Flowers, Mad Unicorn and a second season of The Believers. These titles showcase a range of genres that Thai audiences love, from horror to comedy drama and BL stories.
Local Stories Reach Global Audiences
Malobika Banerji, head of content for Southeast Asia, said the team in Bangkok works closely with local creators. She explained that Netflix wants stories that cannot be told anywhere else. By staying true to Thai culture, the streamer hopes to attract both Thai viewers and fans around the world. In 2024, more than 750 million hours of Thai content were streamed on Netflix.
Partnerships Strengthen the Creative Economy
The report highlights how government incentives and partnerships with agencies like the Creative Economy Agency boost production. Netflix’s Fund for Creative Equity also supports creators outside Bangkok. These collaborations help spread filming locations to lesser‑known regions, which in turn lifts local tourism.
Filming Locations Drive Tourism
Series such as Master of the House filmed at Chateau De Khaoyai in Nakhon Ratchasima, while the film Analog Squad captured the mountains and beaches of Phang Nga. Fans travel to these spots to experience the scenery they saw on screen. The report notes that this tourism boost benefits local businesses and communities.
Looking Ahead
Netflix’s commitment to Thai storytelling shows no sign of slowing. The streamer plans to keep expanding its slate, investing in talent and exploring new locations. By doing so, it supports the growth of Thailand’s creative economy and gives audiences fresh, authentic stories.
