Chris Columbus Gives a Gremlins 3 Update
If you have been waiting for news about Gremlins 3, the original writer has spoken. While promoting his new movie The Thursday Murder Club, Chris Columbus sat down with GamesRadar+ for an interview. He told the outlet that the Gremlins sequel is far from finished. Columbus explained that many scripts exist, but none have received approval. He said the project remains a “never ending writing assignment.”
Why the Sequel Stalls
Columbus reminded fans of the partnership that launched the first Gremlins film. In the 1980s he and Steven Spielberg created a hit that led to The Goonies and Young Sherlock Holmes. When Gremlins 2 was offered, Columbus declined because he felt he had said his story. He moved on to other projects, including Home Alone 2 and the Harry Potter movies.
Even after decades, Columbus admits he still toys with ideas for Gremlins and The Goonies. He says the reason the sequel has not moved forward is simple: they have not cracked the right story. “We do not want to make a film that is not great,” he said. “It has to be more than a box office title. It must give fans something to be proud of.”
What Fans Can Expect
Columbus and Spielberg are now working together again on The Thursday Murder Club. The film adapts Richard Osman’s mystery novel and stars Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie. Their collaboration shows that the two creators still enjoy making movies together, but they remain cautious about reviving Gremlins.
The writer stressed that any future Gremlins project will only happen when the story feels right. He wants a script that honors the original film and satisfies longtime fans. Until that moment arrives, the sequel stays in development limbo.
