Director Genndy Tartakovsky immortalized his high school friend group as a gang of cartoon dogs with serious emotional baggage.
A Love Letter to Lifelong Idiots
Before the premise of a dog facing neutering sparked laughter across studio boardrooms, FIXED started as something far more personal. In Tartakovsky’s own words, “My friends make me laugh like crazy. And I love our dynamic.” So he asked himself the question that launched the project: Can I turn this energy into animated characters in an adult film?
The answer, clearly, was yes. What started as a loose idea for a character-driven comedy evolved into something hilariously specific the moment lightning struck: “What if the dog finds out he’s going to get neutered in the morning?” That was the thunderbolt. The studio laughed. Development began. And thus, a pack of deeply flawed, absurdly lovable dogs was born, each one exaggerated from someone Tartakovsky actually knows.
Caricatured But Close to Home
According to Tartakovsky, the personalities of the dogs in FIXED are amplified, but the roots are real. “Especially the guy Lucky is based on… he was like, ‘So I’m that guy?'” Tartakovsky laughed during a recent Q&A. “I said, look, it’s a joke. But everyone loves Lucky. He’s the lovable idiot.”
This blend of reality and exaggeration is what grounds the film. While it revels in absurdity, including literal talking balls and slapstick anatomy gags, the character dynamics reflect something sincere: the bittersweet transition from youth to maturity, from chaos to consequence.
Not Just Gross-Out Gags
Yes, FIXED is unapologetically crude. But it’s also emotional. “If the characters didn’t work, the movie would fall apart,” Tartakovsky admitted. He knows the gags grab attention, but it’s the relationships that hold it. The dogs bicker like old friends, panic like teenagers, and love like brothers. That authenticity is no accident, it’s lived-in.
Friendship in a Furry Filter
At its core, FIXED is about one last wild night with the people (or pets) who knew you before you became who you were supposed to be. Tartakovsky captured that moment just before adulthood neuters you, literally and metaphorically. And he did it through fart jokes, fight scenes, and a whole lot of heart.
Sometimes the best comedies are just about good friends who aren’t quite ready to grow up.
