Chris Pine rumored to become RoboCop

The RoboCop remake reboot reload thingiedo is still on at MGM. Looks like they are zeriong in on Chris Pine to take the role of Alex Murphy/ RoboCop. The good folks over at Den Of Geek have this news:

he also appears to have bubbled to the top of the shortlist for MGM’s planned new take on the RoboCop franchise.

It’s hardly, you’d think, a particularly compelling role for a an actor, given that they’re going to spend much of the movie in a tin can, yet Pine is the studio’s choice to follow in the metallic boots of Peter Weller and Robert Burke. Movieweb is reporting that MGM is looking for a younger actor to take the part, and Pine’s age of 30 fits the bill

Pine is a good actor who needs a hit outside of Star Trek really, really bad. While Pine is at the top of MGM’s and Jose Padilha’s list to star, Pine has yet to accept. My personal thought is that Pine won’t take the role. Not with Star Trek and the Jack Ryan films, anyway.

Padilha. The director. No, I don’t know who that is either. But this I do know: the powers that be better not cast actors who resemble the actors who played the previous roles. They better not “sex up” Lewis, either, but she should still f**k around with her suspects. Honestly folks, I think the project would gain momentum but stall out at the moment of truth. I just fear that this a remake that is just cashing in on a name brand and nothing more.

Thoughts, int’l friends?

  1. Somebody necessarily lend a hand to make seriously posts I would state. That is the very first time I frequented your website page and to this point? I surprised with the research you made to make this actual put up amazing. Magnificent process!

  2. Why not a harder version Frank Millar style?
    like the comics he did.

I agree the 1st was very well done but not a “Holy Grail” of any kind.
just great late 80’s early 90’s cheesefest of violence and buddy cop cinema.

I do like Pine since I saw Star Trek but the train flick was waaaaaay overrated and not very suspenseful….at all.

      1. It was decent yeah, but no real threat was felt and the warm fuzzy no one dies ending was a nice change but no very riveting to watch.

        jus sayin

    1. Didn’t Frank Miller write the abortion that was Robocop 3? Sorry, I can’t be bothered to look it up.

I maintain my earlier comment: the first hour of Robocop is gold. Spielberg talked about ‘cinematic foreplay’ in his recent talk at the DGA: the way a film-maker can build suspense by giving the audience just enough that they keep wanting more. The first hour of Robocop is a masterful example of cinematic foreplay. Every filmmaker could learn from the way the script weaves together events and the way Vorhoven stages his scenes.

Unfortunately I think they ran over budget on Robocop, and the second half of the movie shows its seams.

    1. I think the first hour of Robocop is absolute gold, it’s so tightly edited, scripted and directed. The second hour is far more lazy, and the film turns into a rather pedestrian comic book superhero revenge flick with excessive violence. It’s a great movie overall, but it’s not holy writ.

I think a remake that holds true to the promise and the humor of the original film’s first half could be quite good. Unfortunately I have no faith in Hollywood to do the right thing with this character. They’ll produce a softer, more family-friendly film, and the more thoughtful elements of the original Robocop will be replaced by non-stop action.
