Kevin Smith talks Cop Out

While Kevin Smith was in Toronto for his Evening with Kevin Smith show, he was cornered for some promotional stuff about Cop Out and Heavy.com is sharing that online.

In the interview, he talks about how he became “ready” for a big studio film, his emotional reaction to Zach and Miri, and the drama about the title. Its a long interview, but a lot of fun to listen to.

I like how Smith refers to himself as a brand because he really is. He is a rare gem in the movie industry as he wants to make films, not products. He is widely aware of the politics of the business and is a very smart man. Its great to see him actually grow in this.

I am very much looking forward to seeing this movie, and I think its going to be huge for Smith.

  1. Dear Mr Smith,

I love you bro…but seriously your real talent is WRITING…if you stuck to WRITING a movie a year and let someone else direct…I think your movies could be even better!

Although my ranking of KS movies is:

    1. Clerks
    2. Chasing Amy
    3. Jersey Girl
    4. Mallrats
    5. Dogma
    6. Zack and Miri
    .
    .
    .

    998. Clerks II
    999. J&SB Strike Back

A lot of his films have moments of genius followed by minutes of boredom…

  2. Wow I just lost a little bit of respect for Kevin Smith he directed that piece of shit? I mean Jersey Girl was one thing but this is really bad. I saw this trailer when I saw Sherlock Homes and I had no clue Smith had anything to do with it then because of how god awful bad and unfunny it looked. Seriously Kev what were you thinking?

    1. What are you thinking? This piece of shit?

      Have you seen it? No.

You can’t say its shit until you have seen it.

You can set your expectations based on this, but how do you know this wont turn out to be so much better than the trailer?

You can’t. You have already decided as a whole this movie is already shit.

      1. Sorry from what I’ve seen of Tracy Morgan he’s not funny to me in the slightest (I say that having said the same thing about Jimmy Fallon years ago and now I actually find him to be sort of funny) so that right there is one thing about this movie that to me makes it unfunny. Mentioning The Departed, Training Day, and Dirty Harry to me is not clever or funny at all. When I was in high school I made my own trailer for Monty Python In The Holy Grail and I did the same type of setup only I mentioned good medieval movies like Braveheart for example and then I cut to the scene where they sing that silly Camelot song. THAT WAS FUNNY! And I was just some kid in high school with a slight interest in movie making.

I’m sorry but when I watch a trailer and one Tracy Morgan is in it B. They do an unfunny version of my idea and 3 I don’t laugh at a single thing said during the trailer then I’m going to call it a piece of shit.

      2. Wait… are you suggesting that Departed, Training Day and Dirty Harry are NOT good cop films?

Because you only mention GOOD movies when making your own little trailer.

They didnt do an unfunny version of your idea. It wasn’t your idea, and its not the first time a film has tagged other movies of the genre to push to a big reveal of a comedy in a similar genre. They have been doing that forever.

And you can call it what you want, but you only insult yourself when you lay judgment on the film as a whole when you have not seen it. It would be as effective as me deciding you are ugly, then ranting about how I dont have to see a picture of you to know you are. Just weak.

You can choose whether you THINK it will be funny or not, and you can even form an opinion on whether you want to see it or not. But you have not seen the film so you have no point of reference to judge the whole film.
