Steve Carell As Billy Mays?

Ok, this story is probably total and complete bullshit… but it got me thinking about it so i thought I’d put up a post about it.

Billy Mays was the ultimate TV pitch man. I swear that man could talk a republican into giving a blow job to a homeless guy for a sandwich… yes… he’s that persuasive… which is why you should never look Billy Mays in the eyes… and why they never let him into the United Nations, because they feared he’d sell them on the idea of turning over global power to him… and that he’d get them all to buy 1000 cases of OxiClean.

Anyway, this rumor came out that Steve Carell is considering playing Mays in a biopic. I think it’s total crap, but if it was true, I’d love the casting.

So what do you think? Would Steve Carell make a good Billy Mays? If not… who else could you see playing the part?

  1. at first i thought the steve carell thing was totally off, for casting, because they dont look terribly similar. but then I remembered all the episodes of the Office id watched, and I think he’s the only man who can get the same LOUD spirit of billy! God, I hope this rumor is true.. lol

  2. Listen Billy Mays was special every 1000 years Chuck Norris grants a wish and poor sales man Robert Mays prayed before the Norris altar and asked to be the greatest pitch man ever and Norris gave him a lock of his beard and told him to go forth. The lock spread and Billy was reborn as the Prince of Pitch.

  3. By John: “I swear that man could talk a republican into giving a blow job to a homeless guy for a sandwich… yes… he’s that persuasive…”
So did Billy Mays cause Ted Haggard to go and ….? Or what about the Republican from Florida with the pages? Damn salesmen always causing those Republicans to…well…
I enjoy(ed) Mays’s pitches, sure we’d have to turn down the volume, but something about him you just had to watch – and even when you’d already seen the commercial 3Bazillion times, you still had to watch it.
Making a biopic style movie based upon his life would be possible/plausible, but Steve Carell doesn’t even have the general build of Mays, so the movie would turn into a comic farce than something that would showcase Mays’s skills as a salesman.

  4. wow. way to f*%king soon. I hate when people start talking about Biopics for people that JUST died. give the family some time to at least put the poor guy in the ground. Good God.

  5. I don’t see how you could make a full length Biopic about Mays. I mean he was totally cool and stuff but I don’t think he has a movie worthy life.
But if they did do it Steve Carell would be perfect.

  6. If they do make a movie about Billy, I hope they show what a cheap S.O.B he was.

True Story: Working at a luxury hotel @ Clearwater Beach Florida, Billy was there and tipped the staff with free sample packets of Oxiclean

  7. I find it strange that Billy died in the same week, and age as Micheal Jackson. And the fact it was only a few hours from here……

Anyway that’s kinda funny, Carell as Mays, NO way

  8. It seems very soon to be discussing a possible Billy Mays biopic…and Carell as the pitchman? I say no and I think (hope) this rumor is BS.

BTW – John, I love your description of Mays’ persuasion abilities.

  9. I don’t see Steve Carrell doing it because I think this is a BS rumor that should be squashed; I mean, with all respect to the sudden death of Billy Mays- in a week and a half of non-stop celeb deaths including longtime comedian-impressionist Fred Travalena and TV legend Gale Storm- I think unless something was already in the works, it is too soon for a bio-pic of any of those we lost recently, be it Shih Kien (Enter The Dragon’s Han) from earlier this month or Michael Jackson at the end of it.

  10. Hmmm…not sure who else might fit the role…but I’m certainly intrigued as to what kind of performance Carell might put on. I’ve gotten so used to seeing him play these awkward ‘nice’ guys.
