Could Danny Boyle Direct The Next James Bond?

There’s no doubt that Danny Boyle is a very gifted filmmaker (although I thought Sunshine was a horrible and overrated film). He’s also very hot right now with a couple of Oscars just recently added to his trophy case for Slumdog Millionaire . He’s also British… so it’s not a surprise that there are whispers going around that Danny Boyle has been offered the chance to direct an upcoming James Bond film.

Now, before we get too excited, it has to be mentioned that this is coming from an ify source that is sometimes right and sometimes wrong.

Still, with that being said it is an interesting concept. The good folks over at Cinematical give us this:

Remember, this is shaky. The best The Sun can do is cite an anonymous source — and all this alleged source says is that Boyle has been offered the film, not that he’s accepted, or is even seriously considering it. It seems reasonable that the offer would be made, though. Obviously he’s in high demand after winning the Oscar last week, and at various times all sorts of directors, from Tarantino to Spielberg, have been rumored to be interested in making a Bond film. Furthermore, Boyle is British, which used to be a prerequisite for a Bond director but has not been enforced lately.

The question is, would he be a good fit? One of the things I like about Boyle is that he’s proven adept at an astonishing variety of genres, from horror to whimsy to sci-fi to whatever Slumdog was. I have no doubt he could make a full-bore espionage caper if he wanted to, and he could probably dig the franchise out of the Jason Bourne-copying rut it got stuck in with Quantum of Solace.

I’m not completely sure how I would feel about this if it’s true. Boyle is a brilliant director… but can he really do this kind of action flick? Who knows really, but it is an intriguing idea. So what do you think? Would you be up for Danny Boyle taking a shot at James Bond, or do you have another director in mind that you’d rather see take the helm?

  1. The only good movies he’s made are 28 Days and Slumdog. Sunshine, Millions, and Trainspotting all blew whale-dick cuz they were boring as hell IMO. IDK why people be hating on Quantum. It is better than all of the Bond movies except(startin with the best): From Russia with Love, Casino Royale, Spy who Loved Me, Goldfinger, On Her Majesty’s, and Goldeneye. Jason Bourne copy? Action-wise yes, and that’s a fucking good thing cuz it’s meticulous, kinetic and ground in realism. Sure quantum was a bit TOO serious for a Bond film, but it was necessary. I’ve always hated the campier Bonds; just slap him in spandex and a mask and he will be good as a Fantastic Four character. Director for the next Bond film? Don’t care as long as it’s kept in the same context of the previous two, just lighten it up a bit.

  2. I think they need to stay away from high brow directors like MArc Forester. I think Boyle is good I loved Sunshine. I dunno he might make a good Bond film.

  3. As long as the man brings back the real Bond, thats fine by me. Casno Royale and Quantum of Solace were great action movies… however, they were not great BOND movies. So much of what makes Bond BOND was lost! No witty afterthoughts to a villain’s demise… no gadgets… no focus on the cars… no mildy campy action… Just some cards, an explosion or two, and a couple of whiny Bond girls (if you can call them THAT.)

  4. I don’t see the big problem with Boyle not being an action director. The best bond films haven’t been the ones that focused on action. Casino Royale was brilliant and was then followed up with QoS which tragically wasted the charecter and story of Casino Royale. I think Boyle could film some fantastic action scenes while developing charecter and story. If I had my way though I’d also like to see Matrin Campbell back for another one.

    Oh and Sunshine was awesome

  5. I don’t see this happening.
He picks smaller movies where he has alot of control so I dont think he would do a bond film. But if he ever did I would definitely be up for it. Marc Forster completely ruined Quantum of Solace just because he could not direct all the big action scenes…plus the film wasn’t that great to begin with. I would love to see Martin Campbell (Goldeneye and Casino Royale) take another shot at it. Or maybe someone like J.J. Abhrams.

  6. I read a few days ago that he already declined on this offer and had no intention of doing doing a James Bond film. And no, Sunshine wasn’t a bad film by any means. I think it’s very misunderstood and like another wonderful that no one liked in the beginning; 2001: A Space Odyssey…I think it will develop and find it’s fanbase soon enough.

  7. I would love to see Clint Eastwood or Martin Scorsese take a crack at a Bond film. I would also love to see Terrence Malick do a Bond film, even though that would never ever happen cause he has only directed like 4 films over 40 yeras.

    1. Scorsese’s bond would be amazing, i was a huge fan of the style and tone of quantum of solace and scorses’s unique touch can give us a bond we’ve never seen before….I want michael mann to try his hand with bond…or nolan

  8. I agree John I thought Sunshine was boaring and I know the whole world was at stake from being wiped out but I as a viewer did not feel it. I could of cared less.

But Danny directing a Bond film I can’t think of a better Director other than maybe Nolan for making a epic bond film. Or bring back Martin Cambell

    1. “I could of cared less”

ARG! That sentence pisses me off to no ends when people use it, because they use it incorrectly. Saying you could care less is saying that you COULD care less, which means you don’t dislike it. The correct sentence would be ‘I couldn’t care less.’ I have no idea why that’s so complicated for people on the net to get.

Sorry, pet peeve of mine. I only ever see it on the net, but nobody I’ve ever known actually talks like that.

  9. why would he want to be a hired hand when every studio in the world would be willing to let him make whatever he wants?

my guess is he has been asked by the brocolis (spelling?) but will turn it down….why would he want to be a hired hand at the very moment in time that he could ask for complete control of his own film?

    1. obviously if he wants to thats different but i don’t see why you would do one now. he just won oscars aplenty, made a very odd film a 100 million dollar hit at the BO so he will have a ton of options available to him so why would he want to be the hired help on a franchise picture….thats just how i see it anyway.

    2. Let’s say you’ve been an Indie director, and your life-long dream was to direct a James Bond movie. Now that you’ve become a much bigger name, its more realistic to go after it now.

  10. Sunshine? Overrated? Haha.
I never saw one comment on that film that wasn’t negative.
    Overrated my ass.
    I loved Sunshine.

As to him doing the next Bond film.
I’d rather he do ’28 Months Later’ first.
