Meatballs Remake In The Works

meatballs1.jpgFor those of you that enjoy dissapointment and bad ideas I have great news for you! They are making a Meatballs remake. We get the news from cinematical:

Without Bill Murray, does the title “Meatballs” even matter? I say not. Er, no. Having said that, at least Lionsgate had the smarts enough to hand the project off to some funny people. Sean Anders and John Morris (of the very funny indie Never Been Thawed) have been tapped to pen the remake, while further buzz indicates that John Whitesell (See Spot Run, Malibu’s Most Wanted, Big Momma’s House 2, Deck the Halls) is in talks to direct, although with a resumé like that, forgive me for being a bit skeptical.

Why don’t they just shit in a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken, put it on the floor, and we can all sit in the theatre and check it out. That may be a better idea than the train wreck this movie will be. If you want a new generation to see Meatballs RE-RELEASE IT!!!!

I would love to see a theatre do an experiment where they show the original alongside the new re-envisioned film and see which one performs better. I have a feeling it will not be the film directed by the dude that did “Big Momma’s House 2.” Funny story about Big Mommas House 2 – one night at Yuk Yuks in Toronto it was being given away as a prize from stage and no one wanted it in a packed fucking room. That was the biggest laugh the movie ever enjoyed.

It is no secret that I dislike remakes of films that were great the first time around. As the list grows, it gets more and more painful to announce this shit. For every remake like “The Departed” there are 200 other remakes that are not worth the materials they are printed on. I hope this is a trend that dies…quickly

  2. “Could “Meatballs” survive without Bill Murray?”
Good question, Doug. I have an answer.

    YES.

Because let’s face it: when they find that they will have to imitate Murray’s charm and pep talk, in the end, It Just Doesn’t Matter. The real reason for getting the title is that after the remade film comes out, LGF will have a slew of DTV sequel remakes, most of them soft core, having nothing to do with the first film…and one will star Corey Feldman. Again.

  3. The only way that Hollywood will get the message and stop remaking (already classic) movies, is when we as consumers stop going to see them.

I’m not happy about this at all; they should just leave “Meatballs” alone. The only things I can do about this is to not go to the theater to see it and don’t buy or rent it when it gets it’s DVD release.
