New Barbarella?

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry but like or not folks Barbarella may be showing up in a theater near you, a new Barbarella that is. The nice folks over at cinematical.com give us this on the story:

Dino De Laurentiis wants to update the classic story of the lady who nearly dies of pleasure while taking sex to outer space. I’m not sure how, but this new franchise will not be a remake, but “a completely new Barbarella,” according to De Laurentiis

Ok, ok this is not the best news of the day but if there was anyone who had to produce this movie at least it is De Laurentiis, the guy has been around. I’m actually surprised that he didn’t have a production credit on the first Barbarella because he was certainly making movies similar and around the same time. From Thee Day of the Condor to Flash Gordon and the Conan the Barbarian series this man has done some of the most fun b-movies and a few straight A types since long before many of us were born. So we know that this movie will be funded properly but…how exactly will this go?

Thankfully they don’t want to use the original script, or the actors (somehow I do not think Jane Fonda would be on board even if they did want her). If they made a new action comedy that just had the flavor of Barbarella (and the costumes of course) with a sparkling sexy girl who knows how to play comedy then it could be a fun romp, but they really would have to find someone spectacular. If there was a good cast and a fun script it could be a super popcorn flick.

I fully approve of a remake of this movie because really, at least with Barbarella we are not treading on anything close to sacred film ground.

  1. Wasn’t drew barrymore meant to be doing this years ago but it all fell through?

it is a great film which gave a truly great band its name…..

They should get nick rhodes to do the soundtrack…..

I love hanoi jane……I think she is fucking awesome and I love how she drove people nuts during the vietnam war…probably a little misguided to have photos taken with the “enemy” no matter where you stand on the right or wrong of things but she was a great….for lack of a better word….. revolutionary….

  2. Well, it was only a matter of time for a possible remake or return. Whether or not it will happen? That’s another ballgame.

It is also only a matter of time for Sharon to audition for this, striptease and all. Whether or not that will happen? That’s another story.

I don’t know who might play Duran Duran, but I would.
In fact, I’m playing Duran Duran right this very minute.
    On ITunes.

Shame on you Sharon for such a statement!!
“Barbarella” is sci-fi classic and deserves a lot of respect.
Of course, I know it’s camp as fuck, but that is what’s great about it, isn’t it?

The original movie had stylish (and very influental) set designs, great costumes and one hell of a groovy soundtrack. It really is an underrated gem.
But most important: Jane Fonda was the hottest women on the planet in those days and by god, that movie proves it.
She embodied Barbarella to perfection and can never be replaced.

Come on, remember that striptease in Zero-Gravity? Best movie opening sequence EVER!!!!

I can’t imagine a remake to this. All the elements that make the original such a fun flick will be gone. No nudity, no campness, no lava lamp-like space, no furry spaceships….that sucks. Not to mention the casting. They probably cast Lindsay Lohan as Barbarella or some other cheap bimbo.
Please movie gods, I beg you! Leave it alone!

btw: Sharon, what are you talking about? Di Laurentiis does have a production credit for Barbarella! Just check the IMDB.
