Worst Previews gives us the story:
David Ayer was on board to direct the new film, which will be a “real world” spin on the main character, a retired elite special forces operative who sees his daughter kidnapped and is told she’ll die unless he gets on a plane and kills the rival of a nasty exiled dictator.
It goes on to say Ayer’s top choice is Sam Worthington (Avatar. Clash Of The Titans) for Matrix. That’s an interesting choice. Mine would be Manu Bennett of 30 Days Of Night and Spartacus : Blood and Sand fame. But I’m a bit confused as to what he means by ‘real world spin’. I’m assuming he means a lack of over the top action and no coffin humor (“Let Off Some Steam, Bennett!”) because the 1985 action film was set in the real world. At least I thought so. On the good news (I think) there’s ressurance that the film will be a ‘hard R’. Well, if there’s a scene where Matrix does anything like this…
Then we should be just fine in the R department.
What do you think> Ready for a body count?
This could be a fun remake, Arnold owned the role as most people will say. Arnold doesnt really look like the ideal special forces type of guy, his physique is way to muscular and lumbering.
I would enjoy someone that more closely matches what a special forces soldier actually looks like. Arnold was just so over the top.
But… wasn’t Arnold the whole appeal of Commando? Without the Gov hamming it up, there’s really nothing left but a shitty straight-to-video quality action movie.
True it was, but that was a different time. Arnold and Stallone were the premier action guys of that era. Seems like they could do no wrong. But this is a different era, as we have seen by the success of movies like Jason Bourne an action star doesnt have to be a muscle bound behemoth.
Honestly I dont know why everyone got so over-excited when news of Arnold returning to film exploded, I doubt he will recapture that same magic as he once had at the height of his popularity. People just view action stars differently now, I know I do!
